Leggings outfits to take you from desk to bar - so you never have to be without an elasticated waist
These failsafe leggings outfits have you covered for all occasions.

By Jess Beech
Thought leggings outfits were just reserved for sweaty gym sessions and boxset binges? Think again. The best leggings work for a myriad of occasions, from weekend brunches to night’s out. Some are even office-appropriate - because who doesn’t want to wear an elasticated waist at their desk?
Stretchy, stylish and flattering, leggings tick all our boxes when it comes to that much-longed for mix of fashion and functionality. The key to dressing them up (or down!) is to pick the right style - think luxe leather leggings for the weekend, printed workout leggings for the gym and a tailored pair for work. What you team them with matters too, whether that’s a slogan t-shirt, structured blazer or a slouchy knit.
To make nailing your next leggings outfit that bit easier, we’ve put together a moodboard for each occasion, courtesy of a stylish bunch of street style stars and a few fashion-forward celebs. Happy shopping!
Leggings outfits for every occasion
Weekend
If you have a corporate job or one that requires a uniform, chances are you can’t wait to slip into something more comfortable by the time the weekend rolls around. Styling leggings for off-duty is easy, all you need to do is wear them in place of jeans. The see-through factor is a deal-breaker though, so make sure you check your VPL before leaving the house. If your leggings don’t pass the test, no problem. Just wear with a long-line top or jumper to steer clear of a wardrobe malfunction. A step up from your average black leggings, try a luxe faux leather leggings or a pair with a subtle print to add interest.

Evening
Leggings for a night out? Yes, but not as we normally know them. Leave your trusty, sofa-worn pair at home and get ready to hit the town in some seriously fancy pants. We’re talking glitter, sequins, high shine patent - the bolder the better. Mix with similarly luxe textures like silk, satin and velvet to add interest to a head-to-toe black outfit. High-waisted leggings are not only great for wearing with shorter tops, but offer a similar level of support as the best shapewear. Look out for split-leg detailing to really show off your shoes.

Gym
Thanks to the boom in athleisure, finding stylish workout leggings is easier than ever. In fact, you could say we’re spoilt for choice. Trade in plain black for a pretty patterned or bold bright pair, and wear with t-shirts, vests and hoodies in coordinating shades. You could even match your trainers too. Fabric really matters here, so to ensure you stay comfortable and confident when working out it pays to invest in squat-proof, sweat-wicking fabrics. And remember, the busier the print, the harder it is to spot those well-earned sweat patches.

Work
If your office has a super strict dress code, chances are leggings won’t make it past reception. But for those that are a little more relaxed, they’re a legitimate alternative to smart trousers and jeans. Leggings that look like pants are the best choice here, combining the appearance of a smart pair of trousers with all the benefits of stretchy fabric and an elasticated waistband. To keep yours office-appropriate, pair with tailored pieces like a crisp shirt or nipped-in blazer. Opaque leggings also work well with tunics and mini dresses that are too short to be worn with tights.
