Put away your jeans: M&S, Zara and Mint Velvet are just some of the brands putting leather trousers back in our wardrobes

An elevated alternative to jeans, leather trousers are the investment buy the high street is championing this autumn

If you've always been loyal to the best jeans, allow me to tempt you away this season. Leather trousers have slowly become an autumn/winter fashion staple, and, thanks to their timelessness, this is an investment purchase that will reap rewards in years to come.

Available in every conceivable cut this season, from straight to barrel-leg, brown and black are the most popular and the most worthy of your investment. Good leather trousers are not cheap, but as with all leather goods, they do age well, meaning you can wear them for years to come; your capsule wardrobe will thank you.

When it comes to styling, the opportunities are endless. For polished moments, add pretty blouses, embellished tops, or fancy footwear to take your leather trousers to evening occasions. And, for a more smart-casual take, try adding a classic white shirt, cosy knits, boots, ballet pumps or loafers for a more laid-back feel.

A true investment style, you'll notice I didn't include a single piece of faux leather, and that is with good reason. Leather is a natural fabric, is breathable, and has a degree of stretch that makes it wear really well. Synthetic faux styles can be quite squeaky and sweaty.

Leather trousers aren't cheap, but they are timeless, meaning that it doesn't matter what the autumn/winter fashion trends for 2026 or beyond are, your leather trousers can be enjoyed from autumn through to early spring, year in, year out, and are more polished than your jeans.

Pick a silhouette you are already comfortable with. The leather look might feel like a leap, but if you already wear straight-cut trousers or jeans, or are fully sold on a barrel, investing in a cut that mimics your regular trouser style will help bridge the gap.

And go for the best that you can afford. The better the quality of leather, the longer you will get to love them, and the better they should age. Chocolate brown or black are definitely the most timeless colour choices, and will work well with all the autumn/winter fashion colour trends for 2026 and beyond.

This celebrity favourite, with everyone from Michelle Keegan to Sandra Bullock spotted sporting a pair of late, leather trousers add a rock and roll edge to any outfit, delivering a cool but elevated finish that you can love on repeat.
