It’s that time of year again - John Lewis has people all over the country feeling sentimental as they share their latest Christmas advert.

This year, the theme of the advert is ‘Don’t give up on giving’ - a call to the nation to make festive gifting personal, joyful and meaningful once again. To do this, they have none other than Dame Kristin Scott Thomas playing a fed up grandmother who doesn’t know what to give to connect to her grandchildren.

Spurred on by a retro talking dog, Pickles, Kristin’s character is reminded to rediscover the magic of Christmas through a specially decorated ‘gran cave’ - full of decorative sparkle and a place where the family can make special memories.

If this touching move has inspired you to reconsider the gift card or cash in a card this year - or you just want to create a festive space dedicated to fun and magic - you can actually design your very own inspired Christmassy fun room.

One of the stars of the festive fun ‘gran cave’ is the disco ball decoration. Perfect for bringing together the generations, a disco ball might not take up space in your interior décor year-round, but when it’s time for family parties, nothing gets a party going quite like it.

There’s the added benefit of introducing the reflective disco ball during the cosy season - it’ll be great at reflecting light to jazz up any room or corner of a room without needing to switch on all the big lights.

On that idea, the other essentials in creating the John Lewis inspired Christmassy cave or corner are playful lights - from a neon star light that is suitable for indoor or outdoor use to a curtain of star lights to hang in your window to give a warm and welcoming glow.

Fun and functional, these lights consume up to 90% less power than incandescent bulbs, allowing you to create a warm, layered lighting effect in your festive set up that can help with bills.

One can never forget oranges in the stockings, so to bring a bit more tradition to your family fun, the frosted orange bauble decoration is delightfully different and still oh-so festive.

For the finishing festive flair, a battery operated Layered Paper Star bauble in a neutral tone adds a classic touch to any colour scheme and oversized velvet bows are always a cosy and comforting Christmas addition that you can reuse for years to come.

Once you've set up your own dedicated space for family festivities, why not set up your own photo booth? Set up a selfie station and add a few props for silly photos, and you've got an inspired way to fill up the family album for years to come.
