Sarah Raven shares her unexpected trick for keeping your home full of colour all winter long
Keep the seasonal blues away with this plant advice for adding some colour and life to your home during winter
The winter months can feel a little dull, with grey days and gloomy weather ahead; our homes could use a little pep-up to keep spirits high. Luckily, garden expert Sarah Raven has just the tip to brighten indoor spaces.
When our gardens go dormant in winter, and lots of the natural colour that surrounds us throughout summer fades, our homes become a necessary retreat to keep us feeling happy and cosy. This often makes us look to brighten dark rooms and keep SAD away by cheering up our interiors.
Gardening professional Sarah Raven has shared her simple tip to inject a little beauty and life into your home during the winter months, explaining why indoor bulbs are her saving grace in winter.
"As winter starts, and the garden gets potentially a bit gloomy, I really rely on indoor bulbs to cheer me up and give fragrance and beauty throughout the winter into spring," begins Sarah.
"One of the easiest ways of doing that is indoor bulbs like paperwhites, and all I've done here is get our leaf planter, the medium-sized one, got a little bit of grit in the base, then peat-free compost," she shows.
"I've pushed in 15 bulbs of Narcissus paperwhite Ziva into the compost and then sprinkled some compost over the top before I put on moss to make it look elegant and pretty from the get-go. Then I scattered a few autumn leaves from the garden," Sarah explains.
Similar to other flowering houseplants, you'll want to make sure it is in an appropriate pot and has a saucer or tray underneath to catch any water drainage.

"Water does seep through a little bit with these plants, which is a good thing actually because it really helps with drainage. But be aware if they're on a nice bit of furniture, put a waterproof tray underneath," Sarah continues.
"That's literally it, just put them somewhere frost-free but light for three to four weeks and bring them into the house where they will supply such beauty and such fragrance. Couldn't be easier," she says.
Just make sure you're up to date on your winter houseplant care and you'll have a blossoming floral display to keep you happy all through the winter.
There are also plenty of plants that need to be brought inside during the winter. While you can store them in a greenhouse, why not bring them into your home to enjoy the splash of colour indoors for the season?
