John Frieda just launched a £12.99 grey blending foam for brunettes - and it's already got a celebrity admirer

Going grey is a completely natural part of the ageing process and it’s something many women choose to embrace. But if you decide you want to disguise your grey hairs (zero judgement here), there are so many product options out there – from more permanent solutions, like hair dye, to temporary fixes, such as root touch-up powder.

One product that’s recently entered the space promises the best of both worlds. An innovative foaming formula, John Frieda has just launched its Intense Grey Blending Foam. Designed to soften the appearance of grey hairs, rather than mask them entirely, the semi-permanent colour-depositing foam adds rich brunette tones after just one use.

Dyeing your hair – with a box dye or in the salon – is a big commitment and one that requires a fair amount of upkeep and money. That’s probably why temporary solutions have grown in popularity, with more and more colour-depositing sprays and powders landing on shop shelves. Ruth Langsford, for instance, swears by the Josh Wood Colour Blonde Smudge and Spray Set, while Trinny Woodall is a big fan of the Color Wow Root Cover Up.

Of course, one of the shortcomings of these products is their temporary nature. Typically, these powders and sprays provide instant coverage – but when you next wash your hair, the pigment washes away too. What’s interesting about John Frieda’s new foam is that it contains semi-permanent pigments which gradually wash out over time.

The launch has already attracted attention on social media, with actress Mindy Kaling among those expressing interest, commenting "whoa" on a post about the product.

John Frieda has also launched a new Grey Blending Shampoo and Grey Blending Conditioner that it recommends using alongside the foam – but this isn’t essential.

One thing to note is that the results aren’t meant to be dramatic. In a user trial, the brand found that the foam visibly reduced grey hairs by up to 50% (and this was when combined with the shampoo and conditioner).

If you want to completely conceal grey hairs, this might not be the product for you. But if you’re only starting to notice a few greys or just want to tone them down for a softer blend, this product is well worth a try – especially considering its reasonable price point of £12.99.
