Hairstyles That Slim!

Choose a new face-slimming hairstyle with a little help from celebrity hairdresser Nicky Clarke...
31 July 2014
Looking for a way to look instantly slimmer? The fastest and easiest way to do so is with a new hairstyle that's perfect for your face shape. Long or short, you can find a style that suits you and will look fabulous and flattering.
Follow these top tips from celebrity hairdresser Nicky Clarke for a whole new you...
Go light on colour
Like dressing in floaty layers, opt for threads of colour so it looks like light is playing through your hair - rather than dark, heavy blocks. As for tone-on-tone colour or tonal layers og balayage (where highlights are applied freehand) woven through.
Play tricks with shape
Like wearing a dress cut on the bias, choose a slimming asymmetric shape. Think this month's w&h cover star, Dawn French.
Feeling like an all-rounder?
If you have a round or square face shape, opt for a pixie crop or longer style - jaw length cuts will make your face look wider.
Don't hide under long hair
Instead, streamline your body with clever dressing. With hair, it's all about the shoulders and the width, where your hair hits your neck.
Don't be square
Too much width at the jaw makes the face look plumper, so add movement with layers and a side parting.
Show off those cheekbones
Add a sweeping or peek-a-boo fringe to a longer style to frame your face and give width to the temples. This will enhance your cheekbones for a 'thinner' look.
Stretch yourself slim
Longer-length styles are great to bring narrowness to the face, or choose shorter styles the have height to help elongate your features.
Play tricks with shape
Like wearing a dress cut on the bias, choose a slimming asymmetric shape. Think this month's w&h cover star, Dawn French.
Avoid 'helmet hair'
Focus on condition and shine, and lay off the hairspray. Hair with movement looks more natural, and if you have lots of body in your hair, your need it to be flirty and fluid.
