"It can be a game-changer. Your ornaments will be accessible, visible, and most importantly intact."

The best ornament storage containers needn't be expensive! A multipurpose bag, this incredibly affordable bag decorated with candy canes can double-up during the holidays, as a bag to transport gifts in or as a way to store your festive decorations. It is padded at the bottom, meaning it could work as a storage bag for baubles, tinsel or other items like wreaths. But it's worth noting that it doesn't have dividers, so you may need another container if you want to keep delicate ornaments protected from damage.

How best to store expensive Christmas ornaments

Expensive ornaments should be stored with the same precision it takes to decorate the Christmas tree, in order to preserve them for years to come.

Caroline Caron Dhaoudi, Founder and Director of luxury home organisation and styling company Homefulness, advises that ornaments should always be stored away from dust and daylight. Keeping them out of harsh lighting means they will not fade rapidly.

Professional organiser and declutterer Vicky Silverthorne also advises that buying black or colored storage boxes (rather than transparent ones) could be a good idea, so that no light can get to any of the items.

Can you make an ornament storage box?

If you're not entirely sold on any of the options above, another choice could be to make a homemade ornament storage container. You can use a range of household objects to do this—including apple storage boxes, egg cartons and drink holders.

How to make an ornament storage box at home:

  1. Get yourself an apple storage box (the big ones, that can be found at farms, supermarkets or retailers); they have handles on either side and are shallow enough for the ornaments.
  2. Use separate cardboard pieces as dividers, depending on how you wish to arrange your ornaments. Cut them to the specific size you need.
  3. Draw out the lines of where your dividers will go (deciding on how many squares are needed) and stick them into place with glue.

If you want to make extra sure that your ornaments won't roll around, you can cut out and stick the bottom of individual egg carton sections to the base of your box, instead of cardboard dividers. They will hold things like baubles nicely, and encase them for extra protection.
