What's the best way to store expensive Christmas ornaments?
Expensive ornaments should be stored with the same precision it takes to decorate the Christmas tree, in order to preserve them for years to come.
Caroline Caron Dhaoudi, Founder and Director of luxury home organization and styling company Homefulness, advises that ornaments should always be stored away from dust and daylight. Keeping them out of harsh lighting means they will not fade rapidly.
Communications Director of the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers (APDO) and founder of Bancrofts Organisation Services, Jaqueline McLeod, recommends wrapping your delicate ornaments in bubble wrap or tissue paper first and then placing them in a robust box. "Organize your ornaments by color, keep your special sentimental ones together separately, and remember to label them when storing them away," she added.
And if you're not sure what kind of storage box to buy, professional organizer and declutterer and founder of You Need a Vicky, Vicky Silverthorne also advises that buying black or colored storage boxes (rather than transparent ones) could be a good idea so that no light can get to any of the items. Linen, long-wearing plastic, and tin boxes are a few other options McLeod recommends.
Can you make an ornament storage box?
If you're not entirely sold on any of the options above, another choice could be to make a homemade ornament storage container. You can use a range of household objects to do this—including apple storage boxes, egg cartons and drink holders.
How to make an ornament storage box at home:
- Get yourself an apple storage box (the big ones, that can be found at farms, supermarkets or retailers); they have handles on either side and are shallow enough for the ornaments.
- Use separate cardboard pieces as dividers, depending on how you wish to arrange your ornaments. Cut them to the specific size you need.
- Draw out the lines of where your dividers will go (deciding on how many squares are needed) and stick them into place with glue.
If you want to make extra sure that your ornaments won't roll around, you can cut out and stick the bottom of individual egg carton sections to the base of your box, instead of cardboard dividers. They will hold things like baubles nicely, and encase them for extra protection.
