When it comes to the fall winter shoe trends 2022 has to offer, while you might not be thinking about them just yet, it's good to be prepared. With the fashion world always one step - or one season ahead - whilst we’re basking in the summer sunshine, designers and brands have already prepped for fall and we're excited to start shopping.

A new season calls for a wardrobe refresh and there’s no easier way to breathe new life into your fall outfit ideas than with a pair of shoes. With the power to elevate the simplest of outfits, whether you want to add a pop of color to a basic tee and jeans combo or toughen up your favorite midi dresses with some stompy boots, the new fall-winter shoe trends are your fast-track way to tapping into the fall 2022 fashion trends in one easy step.

The good news is that when it comes to the fall winter shoe trends 2022, there really is something for everyone. Dopamine dressing is still an overriding theme for the season, with designers embracing their artistry and going all-out with their creations. When it comes to the best designer heels, think sky-high platforms, shiny metallics and sculptural heels. But don't fear, comfort hasn’t taken a back seat. Sporty sneakers, weather-proof wellies and preppy comfortable flats also made several appearances on the runway, proving fashion can be pretty and practical. Phew!

“Maximalism has reigned supreme across many fashion trends this year, and I’m pleased to say, autumn/winter footwear is no different. The new season runways delivered extreme heights with thigh-high boots and chunky platforms, texture galore with fluff, feathers, and lace, as well as an abundance of sparkle and shine with metallic fabrics and jewel embellishments," says Emily Stott, Stylist Ambassador at Stitch Fix UK

Taking lead from the fall 2022 fashion trends, thigh-high boots were paired with mini skirts, Mary Janes complemented the best winter coats and trainers added a sporty spin to floaty frocks. And these stand-out fall winter shoe trends were the perfect finishing touch to every look.

"The beauty of this maximalist trend is that it encourages people to experiment with texture, color and style, in whatever way feels good for them. Granted, it’s unlikely we’ll suddenly see everyone walking around with fluffy shoes on, but the option is there, should they wish!”

These are the eight shoe trends we think you need to know about come fall 2022.

1. Grown-up Mary Janes

The classic school shoe has been reinvented for fall winter 2022 with an adult twist. Gracing the runways of Versace, Giambattista Valli and GCDS, Mary Janes were finished with sky-high platforms, metallic hues, and statement buckles, a far cry from the prim and proper aesthetic we’re used to. The preppy undertones to this silhouette make it ideal for discovering and executing what is Dark Academia style this season too.

Still defined by a buckle strap fastening and round toe, these doll-like shoes are cool yet comfy thanks to the block heel and platform sole.

"We saw a lot of platform heels on the runways this season but don't be frightened by the height, the chunky sole means they're actually easier to walk in than your average stilettos. Team with some modern tailoring - a skirt or trouser suit for a cool weekday look to take you from the boardroom to the bar," says woman&home fashion director Paula Moore.

2. High Shine

With winter comes party season so it’s no surprise that an abundance of sequins and sparkle were also spotted on the runways giving us a much sought-after endorphin boost. Whether it was a more minimalist silver mule or an attention-grabbing thigh-high blue boot, shoes are coming up shiny as we head into the end of 2022.

Make them more daytime appropriate and team a slip-on shiny mule with a pair of jeans and the best t-shirt for an effortless everyday look that still has an impact.

"Finding shoes for your Christmas party is going to be especially fun this year, judging by the number of metallics and embellishments that featured on the new season runways - but sparkles are not just for Christmas! Team a classic ‘jeans and tee’ look with a pair of glitter trainers for lunch with friends, or add some shine to your workwear outfit with a pair of metallic pumps," says Emily.

3. Thigh’s the limit

An over-the-knee boot is a winter staple but this season sees it take on new heights (literally!) reaching thigh-high levels. When it comes to how to style knee high boots (and thigh-high),  take your pick from sky-high purple platforms, slinky sock-style designs, or classic leather stiletto boots. Whilst this may seem like a daunting trend to try, the styling is pretty simple as the statement boot does all the hard work for you, so keep the rest of your outfit pretty lowkey. The longer length will offset a shorter skirt or dress too, offering extra coverage, and allowing you to ditch the tights if you so wish.

"Thigh-high boots are also going to be huge for AW22 and while they may seem a bit daunting at first, there are many ways you can style them with everyday items in your wardrobe," explains Emily.

"Layer a pair of classic black or brown thigh-highs over fitted jeans or leggings, and complete the look with an oversized white shirt. If you’re feeling bold, opt for a brightly colored pair of thigh-highs to wear under a longline coat or a skirt with an asymmetric hem, so you can show off more of the boots in a chic and sophisticated way."

4. Fluffy stuff

For those of you who hate taking your best slippers off to leave the house, you’re in luck! The runways have taken note and given our feet that fluffy slipper feel but in shoes you can wear outside. From shearling boots to fuzzy mules, this may not be the most practical of trends but it’s certainly the comfiest. Make it more wearable and look for furry-lined Birkenstock sliders and fluffy embellishments on sandal straps for a nod to the runways on warm fall days.

5. Sporty Spice

Stylish sneakers are not going anywhere proving comfort is still a top priority for the fall winter shoe trends 2022. Gucci paved the way with its collaboration with Adidas but trainers were also spotted at Loewe, Coperni, and Louis Vuitton. Keep it versatile with styles that will go with everything such as monochrome skater shoes and the best white trainers. But this isn't a trend that you have to keep as part of your leggings outfits - pair with dresses, jeans and everything in between.

"No longer a fleeting trend, trainers are here for the long run, becoming a wardrobe essential. I like to team mine with my best blazer and wide-leg trousers for the perfect high-low mix you can rock at work and on the weekend. To keep it on the smart side, look for sleek leather tennis-style trainers in white or black," says Paula.

And this is a look to invest in and wear in the months to come. Comfort still played a key role at the spring/summer 2023 shows in New York, where Sports Luxe was one of several key themes for the fashion trends 2023.

6. Fashion Wellies

Have wellies ever looked so chic? Normally reserved for wearing with out best waterproof jacket, or working out what to wear to a festival, designers decided to embrace the outdoors. While the vibe might channel that Kate Moss at Glastonbury vibe, to nail the look don a pair of weather-proof wellies with your everyday look during rainy fall months.

Spotted at Chanel, rubber boots were embossed with the brand’s double C logo for an extra luxe touch, giving skirts and dresses a practical edge. Pair with some knitted socks and keep them smart in polished black and cool khaki.

"No longer reserved for the countryside, wellies have worked their way into the mainstream. A black pair is super sleek and you can style them just as you would with your regular knee-high boots, with skirts, jeans and your winter coat," says Paula.

7. Buckle Up

When it comes to fall winter shoe trends 2022, designers went big on details with buckles going to the extreme. Emporio Armani utilized buckle straps up the leg length of its boots, whilst boots at Miu Miu presented extra attitude with several chunky buckle fastenings. This wearable trend is one unlikely to date hugely over the next few years, with the best winter boots always a key component to any winter collection. Ideal for adding interest to a staple black boot, balance out the tough aesthetic and team with feminine flourishes such as a tiered floral skirt or a vibrant trapeze dress.

8. Practical Flats

Platforms may have been seen across the board, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t space for some fancy flats too. From simple ballet pumps to masculine loafers, comfy but stylish flats stepped out at Proenza Schlouler and Louis Vuitton and we’re totally here for it. Take note from Miu Miu and team your ballet flats with some socks for a preppy finish that will keep your legs warm too.

"Peaking in the early '00s, the ballet pump has never truly disappeared from our radar but we're seeing a lot more of them post-pandemic as many of us are ditching uncomfortable attire. They're super versatile too, pretty much working with anything from the best dresses to jeans. Give them an update and wear with loose fit mom jeans, instead of skinnies," says Paula.
