While big fashion houses are still releasing plenty of newness, there is renewed energy around staple, beautiful silhouettes, versatile bag buys that can go from day to evening, and an almost quiet luxury aesthetic that means the expensive look and feel from your bag comes from elegant shapes and fabrics rather than excessive decoration. I can't stress enough, how when it comes to handbags in particular, I believe heavily in investment shopping. Of course, when it comes to more frivolous trends you might want to experiment, but for the most part, a great leather handbag will last years, and in relatively neutral silhouettes and colours won't truly date.
1. Suede
Suede was huge last season, and it's back for another round. Part of the autumn/winter fashion trends 2026 too - it's time to get those suede jackets back out. This luxuriously soft and supple fabric is ideal for autumn, particularly if you lean into classic shades of tan, moss and chocolate that will all feel supremely elevated. This is a handbag trend best served with a large tote or a slouchy hobo silhouette, and it works with everything from bohemian dresses to jeans and a blazer.
Spotted at multiple brands, including Max Mara - one of my favourites. This is the chicest of trends. Think tonal looks, heaps of neutrals and easy elegance - beautiful.
For an elevated bag that won't break the bank, Zara is well worth checking out. With a keen eye for quiet luxury, this large tote is a fab everyday purchase, and that slightly more muted tan hue is beautiful too.
With a relaxed feel, this hobo bag is the embodiment of the bohemian aesthetic. In a bitter chocolate suede, this sensational bag is right on the money for this season, but you can enjoy it for years to come too.
2. Crescents and Curves
Crescent and curved silhouettes have remained a core handbag trend for several seasons, and while the first crop of this shape was all about the crescent, for autumn/winter 2026, expect a softer approach. This broad style covers a heap of designs, categorised by their curved bottoms, but can be super slouchy or pretty structured. Mainly, it is a loss of angular and boxier shapes that dictates this style.
Despite being the originator of the angular Baguette bag, it was the curved shapes at Fendi this season that really caught my attention, and I'm pleased to see these have filtered down to the high street too.
I can't believe this bag is only £40. The latest autumn M&S drop has already been a huge hit and this elegant dark style, almost mahogany could easily be mistaken for a designer purchase.
Cobalt blue is one of the surprising colour trends for autumn 2026, and if you don't want to inject it straight into your wardrobe, this under £40 handbag will give you plenty of fashion currency. I love the two strap detailing for versatility.
3. Oversized shoulder bags
I don't know about you, but I love an oversized tote. Between a work laptop, a bottle of water, headphones and everything else, those small and pretty bags just don't cut it for my 9-5, and so I'm pleased to see chic but large bags back on the fashion map. The shoulder bag goes super-sized for this autumn, but again, stick to classic colours and leathers, and you'll get wear from this style for years to come.
If Chanel puts forward a trend, you know the high street will be watching, and the French fashion houses' runway show was obviously pure heaven for bag lovers, but the oversized styles turned my head the most.
Under £40, this is exactly the sort of bag I would turn to again and again. It would probably even work for a much cooler take on a gym bag, or a weekend away. Style and substance.
When it comes to a tote, the bigger for better for me and this sleek black with chocolate brown design also comes in a more statement-making red and black iteration, depending on how standout you want your arm candy this season.
4. Animal Prints
One of fashion's most enduring trends, animal print never really goes out of fashion. While leopard and mock croc are a constant in terms of bags, expect to see deer, zebra, and snake all on the agenda for the months ahead. I, for one, love an animal print, particularly big cat-inspired ones, as they are fairly neutral, meaning you can use your animal print bag to accent your entire look.
In terms of silhouettes, you will generally find animal print in its purist form on smaller items, including shoulder bags and clutches, while mock croc pretty much covers every shape and size.

This trend, as the name suggests, covers bags that are long, rather than deep, and to that end this quirky trend is best for evening or smaller days bags. Picked up, of course, Fendi and the likes of Miu Miu, this is a look that easily filters down to the high street, allowing for plenty of affordable alternatives.
One of the most beautiful east/west bags, just look at the supreme elegance and quality of this purchase. In a Bordeaux hue it's perfectly on trend in colour and shape, and for under £500, this is one affordable luxury purchase worth investing in.
Details make the bag, and this luxe almost mahogany hue is one of my favourite colourways for leather goods. I just think it adds so much character, whilst still looking very high end. The buckle detailing helps to highlight the elongated shape.
6. Top handle bags
The most ladylike of trends, if you're looking for a special occasion purchase, then the top handle bag is certainly worth consideration. With a very vintage aesthetic, these bags are generally smaller, more compact styles with handles made for grabbing, but for shoulder or crossbody wear. Having said that, many styles do come with a second set of handles, longer straps to add versatility to the design.
Dior was a big champion of this aesthetic, which very much fits with the elegant design ethos of the brand, but there are plenty of high street alternatives that deliver that same elevated finish for a fraction of the price. For the most expensive look? Really consider the handles and the fabrication.
I wouldn't normally back pastel hues for autumn, but sky blue has emerged as a surprising hero of the season, particularly when teamed with chocolate brown. This bag does however come in a multitude of colourways for every taste.
Small but mighty, this tiny top handle bag is perfect for the essentials, and what it lacks in size, it makes up for in details thanks to the scarf and tasselled handle.
7. Everyday clutch bags
I personally have never really got into the clutch bag, and it's possibly why I've snuck this style in at number 7. The everyday clutch is worlds away from my idea of the perfect bag, as I am someone who loves to have their handsfree, and also I don't trust myself not to simply abandon my clutch accidentally.
Having said all that, I am quite taken with the oversized, everyday clutch that takes the shape once small, palm-fitting and reserved for special occasions into everyday lives, with the idea of it going from 9-5 and then onto your 5-9. I was quite taken by Victoria Beckham's offering, which for the first time, made me want to be the kind of woman that could navigate a clutch for a whole day.
