It’s that time of year again where we’re more prone to coughs, colds and those dreaded sniffles (just ask Theresa May…). Here are Woman&Home‘s top tips and tricks on how to stay healthy this winter.
How to prevent a cold
- Drink plenty of fluids – water, that is! Keeping hydrated when you have a cold is important. It helps flush your system through and helps boost your immune system.
- A healthy balanced diet, plenty of vitamins and minerals to keep that immune system strong and fend off any unwanted bacteria. Remember to eat a variety of different fruits and veggies not just greens.
- Try to avoid additives and refined sugar. It’s Christmas and we like to indulge a little more. We’re allowed to but – not too much. Sugar weakens the immune system and doesn’t provide any nutritious value.
- Fermented foods are good. There’s a myth that fermented foods aren’t good for you because they’re low in nutrients. But! – They are as they keep your gut healthy and are high in Vitamin B.
Norovirus: your three-point plan on how to keep healthy this winter
- Prevent: It’s not guaranteed that you won’t catch the nasty Norovirus this winter, but you can prevent it, by washing hands and wiping down surfaces.
- Cope: The feeling of nausea and vomiting are unpleasant, most cases aren’t serious and will hopefully pass within 48 hours, stay indoors ad rest.
- Recover: If the nausea is too much you can drink peppermint or ginger tea to calm your stomach. If you feel like eating start with bland but fresh foods.
And finally, keep the three S’s in mind: stress less, sleep more and socialise. Then hopefully you’ll stay well this winter.
