The Princess Diana revenge dress has gone down in history as one of her most memorable looks and fans are stunned by Elizabeth Debicki's likeliness to the royal behind the scenes in The Crown. Arguably, it's second only to her wedding gown in terms of her most remembered looks—but its story is far from that of her bridal dress.

As a woman known for her class, elegance, and style, it's no wonder that Princess Diana's wardrobe is still remembered so fondly by her devoted fans.

Although the first photos of Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana left The Crown fans disappointed, that opinion is fast changing. As more images have emerged from the much-loved show's set, including Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana on her Egypt trip—it's increasingly clear why she was cast.

The latest shots from behind the scenes of The Crown season 5 have brought it home how much the star looks like the late Princess. They've also reminded us all of that unforgettable Diana revenge dress and here's everything to know about the unforgettable look.

Princess Diana revenge dress story

Not all little black dresses are created the same, nor do many end up with as much meaning behind them. However, the LBD designed by Christina Stambolian and worn by Princess Diana is one of the most memorable of all.

The dress became one of the most talked-about dresses of the time as it was what she chose to wear in her first public appearance following her separation from Prince Charles.

Worn at a gala at the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens back in June 1994, Diana dazzled in the form-fitting black dress. It hit just above the knee and its sweetheart neckline showed her decolletage and shoulders—sending the message that she didn't have to adhere to the royal family's dress code anymore.

Although their separation wasn't very shocking to the general public, Prince Charles and Diana's troubled relationship came to a crashing end.

More shocking still was the fact that Prince Charles publicly admitted to having an affair with Camila Parker-Bowles during his marriage to Diana—the very same day she chose to wear the now-famous dress.
