Burn Calories On The Commute
Great news fitness fans! Research from Virgin Active has shown that the average commuter burns 324 calories on their way in to work - that's the equivalent of 20 minutes on a treadmill.
This should come as welcome news to grouchy commuters in the midst of a New Year health kick. The research was based on the average round trip commute, which usually lasts one hour, and showed that Londoners using the tube system were the highest calorie burners.
When you break down the numbers, it's really not that surprising. During an average commute, a Londoner can walk up as many as 20 steps and spend 10.9 minutes waiting around for their train to arrive.
Of course, there's ways to up the ante even further. Why not try squeezing out a few butt clenches during the journey. Up to 600 could shave off an extra 50 calories. If you're feeling brave, let go of those handle bars on the Tube and try using your core strength to balance yourself.
