Want healthy, beautiful skin? You're probably washing your face wrong...

The future’s looking bright for grown-up women.

Finally, the beauty industry has admitted that “anti-ageing” is a fallacy (no such thing, we’re all getting older, and it's a privilege to do so) which means we can refocus our efforts not on chasing youth but on healthy, beautiful skin and basically just feeling great at every age.

So how do we do it? It is my firm belief that every great skincare routine starts with a double cleanse. Yes, that means washing your facetwice.

Why? Spick and span skin feels lovely, is far likelier to glow and can properly absorb any skincare you use next. By bedtime I can feel the build-up sitting in my pores (thanks, London) and those tiny pollution particles only come off with a proper double cleanse, not once-over with a wipe.

So follow these instructions and soon double cleansing will feel as second nature as brushing your teeth....

Clear the surface

First, remove surface guff with a sweep of a cotton pad and something light and watery. Decléor Aroma Cleanse Biphase Caring Cleanser & Makeup Remover, £28, combines micellar with oil and smells like heaven.

Now cleanse again

Now go in and really clean with something rich, warm water and a flannel. Oils and creams are great for this, as are balms.

I’m currently devoted to Frances Prescott Tri Balm, £46, a luxury balm in a very handy twist up stick.

Alternatively, if oil or spots are an issue and you prefer something that foams up,CeraVe Foaming Cleanser, £9, is one of my favourite new budget cleansers and thoroughly clears without any post-lather tightness thanks to cushiony hydrating ceramides.

And that's it! Your skin is now sparkling clean, free of dead cells and dulling build-up and prepped to let your favourite serums, moisturisers and masks work to their full potential.
