Boden has launched a coat collection inspired by important British women from history.

The fashion brand is celebrating historical women from different areas of the work with the new range.

With the slogan ‘Behind every great coat is a great woman’, the 30-piece collection aims to ‘embrace British creativity’.

‘Our coats are anything but ordinary,’ says Boden, ‘that’s why we’ve named them after remarkable historical British women who dared to be different. Because being brave never goes out of style.’

Each coat in the retailer’s Autumn/Winter 2019 collection is named after an iconic woman, with aspects of the coat designed to reflect the woman or what she did.

Inspired by legendary writers Jane Austen and Emily Brontë, the Austen and the Brontë are two of our favourite picks from the line.

‘One of the most famous authors of all time,’ writes Boden about Jane Austen.

‘She published her novels anonymously and had them hailed by a contemporary male critic to be ‘much too clever to be the work of a woman’.

‘She may have had to hide her true identity, but there’s no concealing her sparkling wit and unforgettable characters (Mr Darcy, anyone?).’

To reflect the writer’s hidden identity the Austen coat comes with a choice of two different collars, one timeless navy and the other garish leopard print.

Honouring romantic writer Emily Brontë, who famously penned the ground-breaking Wuthering Heights set in the moors or Yorkshire, the Brontë coat features a quilted lining and fluffy hood, with a cosy wool-blend fabric to leave you ‘Well-equipped for windswept moors’.

Another standout is the gorgeous Lovelace coat.

Inspired by ‘enchantress of numbers’ Ada Lovelace, who became the first computer programmer, the pink and navy number reflects the two different sides to her.

Despite her father, poet Lord Byron, wanting her not to study maths and science, the computing visionary was both a mathematician and a writer.

Other inspirations include: playwright Frances Burney, Celtic warrior queen Boudica, nurse and voyager Mary Seacole, Victorian explorer Helen Caddick, pioneering nurse Kate Marsden and women’s suffrage activist Millicent Fawcett.

Before joining the woman&home team, Aleesha wrote for their sister site GoodtoKnow, where she covered celebrity news, health advice and where to snap up the cheapest lifestyle buys. With a background in beauty, Aleesha has also written for Stylist and Women’s Health where she developed an understanding into what makes a stellar product and which brands are worth paying attention to. She never leaves the house without a good slathering of SPF and is always on the hunt for new lipsticks to add to her ‘Lipstick of the Day’ Instagram story highlight (and color-coordinated collection).

But it’s not just beauty buys Aleesha can help you with. Social media savviness, strong PR relationships and a need to stay in the know mean she’s all about the latest fashions, clever gadgets and reliable lifestyle buys too. She loves indulging in an interior craze (with a bedroom drowned in prints, plants and pink), is a regular visitor to the Missoma and Edge of Ember 'New In' pages and can’t resist the allure of a kitchen gadget—just ask her three coffee machines. When she’s not playing around with new products and testing anything she can get her hands on, Aleesha spends most of her time with her head in a current bestseller, catching up on the latest Netflix craze with her sister, trying out new recipes, drinking wine with her bestie and (in non-COVID times) has been known to be a bit of a jetsetter amongst her friendship group.
