Why you can trust Woman & Home
I have a confession, when it comes to mattress toppers I've never really put much investment into it, I've always opted for the cheapest option and more often than not regretted it. But once I moved into my rented property and found the mattress to be particularly thin my back soon paid the price. So when I was given the opportunity to review one of the best mattress toppers, the Woolroom's Deluxe Wool Mattress Topper, I was more than ready to try it out.
The Woolroom's aim is to create products with all-natural materials, that are temperature-regulating, long-lasting and naturally hypoallergenic. All of which they achieve by using wool in their products, a material which most of us wouldn't associate with bed products but more so jumpers or scarfs. However, this wonder fabric is what makes this particular mattress topper not only extremely comfortable but also breathable and cooling.
I have been using this topper on my old, rather worn mattress for over a month with the hope it would help with my lower back problems and aching muscles which I usually wake up with. I can confidently say it has made a huge difference to my usual aches and pains but also made sleeping that much cooler. Because despite following all the recommended steps to good sleep hygiene I frequently find myself overheating while sleeping.

Woolroom Deluxe mattress topper: First impressions
Upon receiving the topper I was delighted to see the eco-friendly packaging, a cardboard box (not pictured) and a linen reusable zip-up bag. The bag was the first indicator of the high-quality materials and luxurious branding that the Woolroom prioritises and it made me more excited to put the topper on my bed.
The next thing I noticed when first opening the topper was its weight. Weighing around 4.2 kg, the topper is made of a thick layer of traceable British wool with an outer fabric of organic cotton. Aside from the weight, the topper came in perfect condition with no strange colouring or smells, from the outset, it was clear this was a product of high standards.
Woolroom Deluxe Mattress Topper: User experience
Comfort and support
The comfort of the topper was something I had high expectations for, with my mattress being so unsupportive and worn I was asking a lot from the Woolroom's deluxe topper.
Luckily I felt an immediate difference, it added an impressive extra amount of bounce to my mattress and thanks to its heavy wool lining there was a medium level of support to it as well. It's nothing like a memory foam mattress topper, there's no squishy bounce-back feeling which I find a lot more comfortable however if you looking for a firmer level of support this may not be enough for you.
Breathability and cooling
One of the biggest issues I have when sleeping is overheating, I've always struggled to keep cool in bed no matter what tog of duvet I've had. So when I immediately noticed a difference after sleeping with this topper on, it was a huge relief not to have to contemplate buying one of the best cooling mattresses.
With wool being the main component of the topper I was very sceptical of this cooling effect, wool is usually something I would argue warms you up, not cool you down. And yet, it was clear my body temperature was more consistent through the night as I didn't find myself waking up as frequently. I would argue that this was aided by the cooling properties of one of the best duvets from Simba, the Hybrid duvet.
On their site, the Woolroom claims that "Woolroom toppers will deliver 25% better sleep than polyester, down and feather through superior moisture management and heat regulation." The same goes for the breathability of the topper, the natural fibres of the wool allow for a great level of aeration and add to the cooling effect you experience from using it.
Motion isolation
Unlike a memory foam topper, this wool model doesn't really offer much when it comes to motion isolation. Even with the weight somewhat equally dispersed on the mattress, there's always a fairly detectable motion from the other side of the bed.
I think should my mattress have been of better quality then the topper may have offered better isolation, however, with such a low-quality mattress there was not much change. So if you're sharing the bed with a fidgeter you might want to opt for a thicker mattress topper that will provide stability to your mattress.
Additional features
As with the rest of the experience, I appreciated the quality of the elasticated straps to keep the mattress topper from sliding. With other, cheaper mattress toppers I've had in the past, the elastic bands on each corner have offered little to no help when it comes to keeping the topper secured in place. However, with the Woolroom Deluxe mattress topper, I found it difficult to remove from the mattress which was a pleasantly surprising change.
How does the Woolroom mattress topper compare?
One of the most obvious differences between this Woolroom topper and others I've tried is the high-quality materials used. The wool filling is a unique characteristic and delivers on its heat regulation promises, so much so that I don't think I could go back to synthetic-filled toppers in the future.
As mentioned above, this topper certainly isn't the most supportive or thick which may be an issue for those looking for help with persistent pains and aches. In that case, it would definitely be best to look into mattress toppers designed to transform your mattress completely.
Should you buy the Woolroom Deluxe mattress topper?
If you're someone, like myself, who struggles with overheating whilst sleeping and has minimal discomfort when you sleep this is a brilliant mattress topper to invest in. It's made of the highest quality materials, has a truly effective heat regulation and will make a notable difference to the comfortability of your mattress so proves a worthwhile investment if you know you need a mattress topper.
What it won't do is completely transform your sleep experience in terms of support, and if that's your priority then it's definitely a good idea to invest in a different type of topper. And if wool isn't your bag, for eco reasons or otherwise, then try out a more eco-conscious option like the Panda Bamboo mattress topper.
If you're all about high-quality, locally sourced materials which deliver on their promises then this is the topper for you. And you can certainly trust that it won't disappoint in providing you with a better night's sleep.
