We tested one of the UK's bestselling cooling mattresses - and it's surprising in more ways than one

With a plush pillow top, 3,000 individually pocketed springs and specialist foam layers designed to regulate temperature, it's perfect for anyone who needs help sleeping in the heat, without blowing the budget.

With so many brands competing for a place among the best cooling mattresses, it's easy to become sceptical of lofty sleep claims. Origin says its Hybrid combines IceCool ThermoFoam, SnowTencel fabric and BambooAir technology to keep sleepers comfortable throughout the night, while offering enough support for couples with different sleeping styles and body weights. We wanted to find out whether it delivers on both fronts.

Our tester, Holly, has been sleeping on the Origin Hybrid with her husband for almost a year. As she approached her late forties, finding a mattress that could help with night-time overheating became a priority. "I've always been a bit of a sweaty sleeper," she says, "but add in fluctuating hormones, drunk teenagers waking me at 3am and a rather large, fluffy cocker spaniel sleeping on my feet and I'm reaching temperatures hotter than the sun." Could the Origin Hybrid be the answer? "With materials named IceCool ThermoFoam, SnowTencel and BambooAir, I felt like I was edging closer to sleep that resembled floating on a cloud in a gentle breeze instead of a bed of molten lava." Often, this means that sleepers who suffer with back or joint pain get the most out of a hybrid mattress, but that doesn't mean that pain-free sleepers won't suit the Origin Hybrid.

As one of the brand's best-sellers, it's clear this suits plenty of people. With infusions of bamboo and wool, as well as springs, the heating effects of foam are minimised, meaning you're less likely to get the overheating feeling that comes with foam. In fact, our tester, Holly commented on the "refreshed" feeling of her skin in the morning.

Like many shoppers, I pay close attention to the materials that go into a mattress, and Origin has made some thoughtful choices here. The cover incorporates TENCEL™ fibres, which are derived from sustainably sourced wood pulp and prized for their naturally breathable, moisture-wicking properties. Alongside this, the brand uses bamboo-derived fibres to encourage airflow through the sleep surface and help create a fresher sleeping environment.

It's encouraging to see Origin investing in more responsibly sourced materials, although sustainability isn't the brand's primary selling point. If you're specifically looking for a mattress with stronger environmental credentials or carbon-neutral initiatives, there are brands that go further in this area. However, for shoppers who prioritise comfort and performance first, the Origin Hybrid's material choices are a welcome bonus rather than simply a marketing talking point.

Unboxing the Origin Hybrid Mattress

Mattresses aren't deliveries that can come out of the blue: they're all big and bulky, even if you've invested in a bed in a box option. Holly was really pleased with Origin's communication and delivery, which meant she could prepare well in advance of it arriving. The delivery drivers were helpful and friendly too, which is an experience many people have commented on when reviewing Origin's mattresses.

Holly noted that the large, long carboard box was easy to remove and the mattress came out of all its wrapping easily. Some hybrid mattresses need some time to rest and breathe, but the Origin Hybrid "bounced into shape right away" according to Holly. She noted right away that this feels like "a quality mattress that will go the distance." Whilst first impressions aren't everything, they are important.

What is the Origin Hybrid Mattress like to sleep on?

When we're testing mattresses, we're looking at a few factors:

• What is the motion transfer like if you share a bed?

Holly has now been sleeping on the Origin Hybrid Mattress with her partner for almost a year, giving us an excellent long-term picture of how it performs beyond those all-important first impressions. Like many of the best hybrid mattresses I've tested, it strikes a careful balance between pressure relief and support, pairing foam comfort layers with individually wrapped springs that respond independently to movement across the bed.

During her first few weeks, Holly found the perimeter slightly softer than she expected, particularly when sitting on the edge of the mattress. However, once lying down in her usual back and side-sleeping position, those concerns disappeared. "There's a lovely balance of firmness and cosiness," she told me. "It's responsive, supportive and moulds to your body." That combination is exactly what I'd expect from a well-designed hybrid. The foam contours around pressure points at the shoulders and hips, while the pocket springs provide underlying support that helps keep your spine in a neutral position rather than allowing you to sink too deeply.

One of the biggest advantages of a quality hybrid mattress is its ability to isolate movement, and Holly found this was one of the Origin's standout strengths. Despite sharing the bed every night, she noticed very little disturbance when her partner got up or changed position. "It absorbed the shift in weight comfortably and without complaint," she said. Cooling technology can't eliminate night sweats altogether, but the right materials can help dissipate heat and moisture more effectively than traditional memory foam. Holly noticed a tangible difference after switching to the Origin Hybrid, telling me she had "definitely noticed a reduction in night sweats. Not completely, but enough to stop washing sopping wet sheets every single day." More importantly, she said she woke up feeling noticeably fresher in the mornings, and she's since recommended the mattress to several friends who also struggle with overheating at night.
