The 12 products our beauty team are swapping out - and in - to survive the heatwave
Our beauty routines have been given an easy breezy upgrade for the warmer season
It's quite literally our job to test a plethora of products each week, so it's not uncommon for our beauty team to frequently switch up our routines to include new favourite formulas or to suit the seasons.
With temperatures reaching new heights, it's no surprise that we've made some seasonal changes to cater to the heatwave - from switching our best face moisturiser out for a lightweight alternative to popping Korean face masks in the fridge for a cooling effect.
After an (air-conned) office discussion, all four of us on the digital beauty team realised we've been making some helpful alterations to our regimes in order to stay cool, calm and collected. Here's all the handy tips we discussed...
The woman&home beauty team's ins and outs for the heatwave
With the temperatures spiking this summer, it's only natural that we're making some changes to our beauty routines in order to cope with the rising celsius. So, without further ado, this is everything we're swapping in and out of our daily regimes during the heatwave – including upping our deodorant protection and putting our beauty products in the fridge to keep them cool.
Fiona's heatwave beauty ins and outs
woman&home Beauty Editor, Fiona McKim's ins and outs for the heatwave include trading her salon gel pedicures in for a DIY at-home job using a luxe timeless nail polish, slathering on the best instant tans for shorts weather and swapping natural deodorants out for a heavy-duty formula that withstands a day of sweating.
OUT - Body moisturiser
RRP: £33
"I’m pretty lax with body cream at the best of times, and tend to remember an all-over slathering a few times a week, max. But currently that’s down to zero times a week, because my pasty pins are on perma-display and I cannot tell you how differently I feel about that when I can chuck Vita Liberata Body Blur on beforehand. This instant tan/body makeup is one of my true desert island products. A tiny bit blended over legs or arms washes over veins, bruises and bumps, gives skin a radiant glow and is so stubbornly transfer-proof you can truly forget you’re wearing it. One caveat? You can’t apply rich hydrators below, or it goes on all funny and melts into patches. Hence my body cream ban, which is no great loss when I’m looking for excuses not to do that, and can happily ride out the heatwave in shorts."
OUT - Fancy natural deodorant
RRP: £5
"It’s all fun and games wearing chic, scent-led deos in pared-back packaging - up to a point. I’d been using one for a good month until the heatwave hit, and why not? It looked so glam on my dressing table in its muted little tube and smelled like woods and florals, better than some of my fragrances! But everyone’s system has its limits, and I think mine is about 29.9c because by 4 pm one heatwave day that spendy spell had been broken and I was left feeling like a teenager in post-PE lessons again. Paranoid. So out came my trusty drugstore fave with true anti-perspirant ingredients and a 48-hour guarantee (although I wouldn’t be putting that to the test). Order has been restored, and I’ll rely on actual perfume for fancy smells for the foreseeable."
OUT - Salon gel pedicures
RRP: £30
"I love a salon pedicure as much as the next spoilt beauty ed - and my toes can barely remember seeing the inside of a sock at this point - but the unhinged temperatures we’ve been experiencing have somewhat welded me to my sofa of an evening, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. A quick dry file with the satisfyingly (and horrifyingly) cheese grater-like Tweezerman Pedicure Rasp, a slather in aromatic Margarett Dabbs Intensive Hydrating Foot Lotion and a lick of Dior Vernis in J'adore furnished me with both a sense of achievement and a surprisingly passable shimmering pedi. What’s more - nobody had to change out of their linen pyjama shorts or sit on a squeaky pleather chair in sweltering heat. A win!"
Aleesha's heatwave beauty ins and outs
The heatwave has encouraged Beauty eCommerce Editor, Aleesha Badkar, to make a few swaps across her skincare, bodycare and makeup regimes. In fact, she's waved goodbye to the likes of body lotions, lightweight foundations and face oils, instead welcoming in a body SPF, a skin tint stick and a cooling gel face mask.
OUT - Body Lotion
RRP: £20
"I'll be honest, unless I'm actually on holiday, I'm pretty hopeless at remembering SPF for my body. Body oil, on the other hand, is something I reach for religiously on my arms, shoulders and décolletage. But with temperatures soaring, I've been sensible enough to swap it out for this SPF instead. It's lightweight, feels hydrating and refreshing on the skin in the sun, and doesn't leave any white cast behind - so it's basically doing the job of my beloved body oil, minus the sunburn guilt."
OUT - Lightweight foundations
RRP: £33.50
"I'll usually reach for my best lightweight foundations, unless I've got a big event - but even that's felt like too much during this heatwave. I've put it away in favour of this bareMinerals stick, which takes me all of 30 seconds to apply. It glides on and leaves a light sheen of colour that evens out my skin without looking like I'm wearing anything at all - just a natural, glowy finish that doesn't budge, no matter how hot it gets. It makes me look finished and glowy but feels like I'm not wearing anything. Win-win."
OUT - Face oils
RRP: £16
"Face oil is usually my last step in the evening, partly for the nourishing skin benefits but mostly because I love using it to do a bit of facial massage and lymphatic drainage. But during this heatwave, oil is the last thing my skin wants; instead, I've swapped in this hydrating gel mask, which is the closest thing to pressing a cold flannel to your face. That cooling, bouncy gel is instant relief after a day of AC and fans blasting your skin dry, and with triple hyaluronic acid working at different layers of the skin, it leaves my skin feeling properly plumped and hydrated rather than just refreshed for five minutes."
Naomi's heatwave beauty ins and outs
For Digital Beauty Writer, Naomi Jamieson, this heatwave is rightfully prioritising sun protection and cooling skincare. This means she's put the thick sunscreens to the side for a weightless, glow-boosting SPF oil, not to mention she's avoiding uncomfy textures by popping her skincare products into the fridge for a soothing effect. As our in-house fragrance expert, Naomi's decided to trade her rich and warm woody scents in for lighter, soft florals – including a popular Issey Miyake perfume.

OUT - Thick sunscreen lotions
RRP: £22
"I'm someone who applies lotion over my entire body daily, after a shower, because I have dry and easily irritated skin, but with it being summer, I've actually swapped my go-to moisturiser (Vaseline's Cocoa Radiant lotion) for Caudalie's Glow Oil SPF50. It offers hydration, radiance and sun protection, as well as feeling lightweight on the skin, compared to a thicker cream. It also boasts a lovely floral scent and can be applied to your face, body and even your hair."
OUT - Rich & warm woody scents
RRP: £79 for 50ml
"While I typically gravitate towards very woody and musky scents, in this summer heat, I've actually been reaching more for soft, airy florals, specifically Issey Miyake's L'Eau D'Issey Intense and Eau Magnolia. The latter is so dewy and delicate, with creamy notes of dreamwood mingling with neroli, rose and soft magnolia. All of Issey Miyake's perfumes feel very sheer and comfortable to wear; they're never overpowering, but they're also not quick to fade. The linger closely, offering a sunny, floral and aquatic essence to your skin."
OUT - Uncomfy textures out
RRP: £14.90 for 4 masks
"As mentioned, I've already swapped my go-to, everyday body lotion for a lightweight SPF oil, but I've also followed this theme with the rest of my skincare routine, too. I've ditched heavy creams and tacky serums for things that feel comfortable and cooling in response to all these heatwaves. In fact, I've actually taken to keeping a few of my favourites, like Biodance's Collagen overnight masks and Dr Althea's Stretchfit Calming Pads, in the fridge, for instant, soothing relief."
Sennen's heatwave beauty ins and outs
Like many others, my key theme for the heatwave and summer months is lightweight. Whether I'm wearing makeup or simply skincare, I want my skin to feel truly weightless – not heavy nor claggy. As for the former, I want my makeup to appear incredibly natural, with a barely-there appearance. Meaning, I'm trading in my heavy duty full coverage finish for a 'my skin but better' appearance. Think, glowy face sunscreens and a dewy, radiant finish. In terms of hair, I'm actively avoiding anything that is going to make me warmer than I already am – hence why I've swapped out my typical blow-dry for air drying my hair.
OUT - Highlighter
RRP: £49
Like many others, I'm taking a natural-looking, minimalist approach to my makeup this summer. After taking notes from Meghan Markle's makeup artist, I've put my chunky, glitter-infused highlighters to one side and started applying Tatcha's The Serum Stick to the high points of my face at the end of my makeup routine. This gives my complexion a naturally radiant, dewy, fresh-faced appearance that is perfect for the sunny months.
OUT - Blow-dry styling hair
RRP: £29
To be honest, I can't bring myself to even look at my best hair dryer in this heat, let alone blast hot air into my face. So, as you can imagine, I've pressed pause on the heated hair styling for now and have been opting to air dry my strands instead. To help it on its way, I've been applying Living Proof's Air-Dry Styling Cream throughout my lengths, helping to smooth the hair and keeping frizz and flyaways at bay.
OUT - Mattifying face sunscreen
RRP: £15.50
I typically opt for one of the best sunscreens for oily skin that has mattifying formula to prevent any shininess. However, for the brighter season, I've decided to switch it out for a glowy, radiance-boosting buy that also wears well underneath a light layer of makeup. Enter, Beauty of Joseon's Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ – a weightless, non-greasy sunscreen that unlocks a glass skin glow.
