The heartbreaking reason the death of the Queen’s dog is particularly devastating

The loss of the Queen's dog is just so sad

It was reported this week that the Queen has suffered the loss of her new Dorgi puppy, Fergus, just over a month after the death of her husband, Prince Philip.

Her Majesty’s Dachshund-Corgi cross died at the weekend at just five months old, forcing the monarch to deal with even more grief in the weeks following the Duke of Edinburgh’s passing.

The little pooch was a gift to the Queen from her second-born son, Prince Andrew.

The Duke of York gave his mother two pups when his father Philip was battling illness in hospital earlier this year.

Fergus the Dorgi was given to Her Majesty along with a Corgi named Muick to help her through the tough time and to replace the joy that her late Corgi, Vulcan, brought to her before he died in 2020.

The Queen is famous for always having had dogs by her side at Buckingham Palace and her other royal residences, and it was expected that she would not take on any more four-legged family members after Vulcan left her.

The loss of the Queen's dog is particularly devastating for an especially heartbreaking reason, too.

Royal biographer Penny Junor has detailed how the Queen’s canine companions are a pivotal part of her life when it comes to being her true self and enjoying down time away from the pressures of the crown.

The recent weeks have, no doubt, been tough for the Queen, who is likely to be in an even more fragile state after losing Fergus, having reportedly walked every day to cope with Philip’s death.

“Her bond with her dogs, though, reveals something essential about The Queen. She is an essentially shy woman, thrust into a public role at an early age that does not come naturally to her,” Penny told the Telegraph.

"Around her dogs she can be completely herself, sure in the knowledge that they love her for who she is, rather than what she is. That has made them her most trusted companions.”

It was also recently claimed that the Queen has now lost the three people she has ever trusted: Prince Philip, Princess Margaret and her mother. So her pooches are more vital than ever right now.

“With almost every other person from her youth now gone – her parents, her sister, her husband, most of her close-knit circle of friends of similar age and background – it is one more blow that she will, in public at least, bear with the dignity and stoicism we all so admire in her,” Penny adds.

Prince William and Kate Middleton also suffered the loss of their own dog, Lupo, at the end of last year.

In November 2020, the couple took to the Kensington Palace Instagram page to share the sad news that they had said goodbye to the Cocker Spaniel.

Lupo was given to Kate and William when they were newlyweds, as a gift from Kate’s brother James, who is known for being a hugely keen dog lover.

The Cambridges’ family dog is believed to have supported Kate when William was away working in the Falkland Islands in the early days of their marriage.

“Very sadly last weekend our dear dog, Lupo, passed away. He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much. - W & C,” the future King and Queen Consort wrote online when the time came for Lupo to leave them.

James has since given William, Kate and their kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, a new brown Spaniel.

The family were seen leaving their London home with the adorable new family member earlier this month, with a royal fan recording the rare sighting.

The family of five can be seen boarding a helicopter in the grounds of Kensington Palace, with their new puppy, whose name is yet to be confirmed, in tow.
