Sex and the City fans vote for Liz Hurley to replace Kim Cattrall

Sex and the City fans have shared their top choice to replace Kim Cattrall’s character on the show’s upcoming revival - and it’s not as far-fetched as you might think. 

Liz Hurley was tipped as the favorite star to join the iconic friend group after network bosses confirmed last month that Samantha Jones has been written out of the series reboot, And Just Like That. 

A Plenty of Fish poll taken by 1000 people found that 12% of voters picked the British supermodel to join Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda as they navigate life in their 50s. Meryl Streep was a close second, earning 11% of the votes, followed by Kerry Washington, who won 9%. 

However, it looks unlikely that Liz will be getting a casting call any time soon.

HBO Max chief content officer Casey Blows has hinted that rather than replacing Samantha, Sex and the City writers will explain her absence as a realistic reflection of longstanding friendships. 

“Friendships fade, and new friendships start. So I think it all is very indicative of the real stages, the actual stages of life,” he told TVLine in February. “They’re trying to tell an honest story about being a woman in her 50s in New York. So it should all feel somewhat organic, and the friends that you have when you’re 30, you may not have when you’re 50.” 

Kim Catrall isn’t the only cast member who will be missing from the reboot. Mr. Big, the longtime love interest of Carrie played by Chris Noth, is another character reportedly been scrapped from the script. Miranda’s husband Steve, who is played by David Eigenberg, is also rumored not to be making a comeback. 

The potential replacements for these characters, if any, have not been revealed, but it’s possible that they too will simply be written out of the show. The And Just Like That production team is committed to depicting the women’s lives as authentically as possible and is therefore unlikely to swap fan favorites for unfamiliar faces. 

“They’re not trying to redo Sex and the City,” Casey said. “They’re not trying to say that these characters are reliving their 30s. It is very much a story about women in their 50s, and they are dealing with things that people deal with in their 50s.”
