Best Easter drinks 2021
Maison de la Rougerie Brut Crémant de Bordeaux
A 5 star fizz
This was a real corker. Not too sweet but not too dry. It had a deep peachy flavour that was really pleasing and incredibly moreish. De la Rougerie have been producing wines since the 17th Century and this one seems like a case of experience paying off!
Bio Organic Prosecco, Veneto, Italy
For the organic wine fans
A great prosecco! The label says extra dry and it definitely is. It's a grown-up prosecco and not sweet like some of the supermarket varieties people might be used to and although it's organic, it isn't sulphite free. It's 11% but feels more alcoholic for some reason. A lovely way to toast Easter.
Aldi Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut NV
This is a great Champagne, especially for the price. It's been winning awards for years and this still tastes as good. It's a perfect way to toast Easter with the family, whether on zoom or in person. It's got great flavours of red berries and has a floral aroma.
Giol OG Treviso Prosecco Sur Lie
The ultimate vegan fizz
A lovely organic and vegan prosecco. Full of balanced flavour - not too sweet but not too dry. This is unfiltered and contains no added sulphites so it's a little cloudy but shouldn't leave you with a hangover!
Tesco Finest Prosecco Valdobbiadene
A totally fab fizz. Full of white fruit flavours, fine bubbles and a floral aroma. Would recommend it as a way to raise a glass to the Easter weekend. Also, at £10 a bottle it's a total steal.
Classics Crémant De Bourgogne
A delightful cremant that has proved popular with wine experts. Flavours of white fruits and redcurrants are easily noticeable. It feels like a real treat to be drinking it and it's only £10 a bottle.
Adrien Chopin Brut Champagne
Superb supermarket champagne
This one is surprisingly from a supermarket - Morrison's. They've done a great job and it's a fantastic bottle of Champagne for its £18 price tag. It's matured for 3 years giving it a great flavour - noticeably brioche/pastry and it has a floral, citrussy aroma.
Swanaford Classic Cuvée
An English sparkle
An English sparkling wine from a small family vineyard in Devon. Made using the classic Champagne grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. As expected it has a floral aroma, which is really pleasant. The flavour is reminiscent of crisp apples and citrus fruits.
Charles Mignon Comte De Marne Brut Grand Cru
Definitely a special way to celebrate Easter. Whilst this Champagne is £39.99, it feels like a bargain compared to some of the Champagnes with bigger names. Very smooth and a pleasure to drink.
Bouvet Saumur Rosé Brut
Sweet and sparkling
For anyone who loves rose Champagne, this is an absolute gem. It's a fraction of the price that its Champagne counterparts would sell for and it's just as delicious. Raspberry flavours are abundant and it's floral to the nose. It would be great as an aperitif or even with dessert as it's a slightly sweeter fizz.
Champagne Delacourt Brut
An elegant choice made by an all female wine making team
The tasting notes include brioche, vanilla, red apple & tangy peach - they're definitely right about the white fruits! The brioche flavour is a little trickier to find but there's a bread-y caramel-y flavour that is not dissimilar to the french treat. It's best served with fish or chicken so use it to make a toast to the long Easter weekend, or as an aperitif.
Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte Rose Exclusive Brut
Nicolas Feuillatte are known for their great Champagnes and this rosé version is no different. If you like your Champagne dry then this may be slightly too sweet for you but rosé lovers will be in fizzy heaven. There are lots of berry flavours coming through - raspberry and strawberry in particular.
Morrisons The Best English Sparkling Brut Vintage 2010
Full of fruity aroma and flavour. You get a big hit of blackberry on the nose and it's full of red apple flavours - it's almost a bit like cider. A lovely English sparkling and one that would be great to see you through the Easter day.
Prosecco Il Fresco, Villa Sandi
Sweet but not too sweet, dry but not too dry
This is a lovely prosecco which hits the mark for those who like it Medium Dry. It's not too sweet but sweet enough that it will likely please most prosecco drinkers. Would recommend!
Taste the Difference Conegliano Prosecco
You really can taste the difference
It's clear to see why Sainsbury's have chosen this as their Taste The Difference prosecco. Fresh flavoured with a hint of white fruit and citrus. This would make a lovely aperitif.
Irresistible Eight Acres Sparkling Rose
Just try to resist this rosé
This English sparkling rosé is a cracking drink. Berries on the nose with a fruity flavour. It's part of the Co-op's Irresistible range and is a new collaboration with the Hush Heat wine estate.
Finest Blanquette de Limoux
A sparkling wine created by Benedictine monks
Something a little different: the oldest sparkling wine that was created by Benedictine monks. A white fruit and green apple flavour which would work great as an aperitif or if you're serving seafood.
M&S Prosecco Rose
Fragrant and fruity
Fragrant & fruity, this rose Prosecco has berrylicious flavours. It's not too fizzy and has fine bubbles, which always feels more luxurious. Although it's from the hilly north-east of Italy, it makes you feel like you're on the beach in sunnier climates.
Hattingley Valley Classic Reserve English Sparkling Wine
A lovely local wine
A lovely bottle of fizz that comes in a delightful presentation box. Even better, it's grown in England (Hampshire) so is a locally produced wine for most people. It has apple notes and feels incredibly fresh.
Bouvet Ladubay Saumur
Zestiness, apple flavours and floral goodness are on offer in the Bouvet Saumur. It's delicious and the bubbles are oh-so-fine. Bouvet Ladubay has been making wine for over 150 years and their experience really shows!
Fillipo Sansovino Prosecco
A treat for your palate and your credit card
What a bargain! £6.50 for a great rose prosecco. Full of apple flavours and strawberry vibes on the nose. It would make a great aperitif.
The Best Etienne Leclair Champagne Brut
A fresh and fruity fizz
A lovely fizz that has a lovely fresh apple flavour. The bubbles are fine and the Champagne has a wonderful aroma of lemon and florals. It would make a great aperitif.
Booth's Prosecco Rosé
A delicate and delicious rosé
This was a nice delicate rose prosecco. Strawberry hints on the nose and to taste. Tastes very summery which is a nice way to bring in Easter - looking forward to the warmer season.
Henri Cachet Champagne
A dry and citrusy sip
Another supermarket hit! Asda have done a great job with this Champagne. It's dry but easy to drink. It's definitely possible to taste the hints of vanilla and the fresh citrus flavours that they suggest.
Roger Goulart Gran Reserva Cava
Enjoy a coupe of Cava
A really fresh fizz. This was floral and fruity in flavour and had a mild fizz, which was nice as it makes it easier to drink. A lovely Cava to toast Easter with.
After leaving university with a BSc in Food from the University of Birmingham, Samuel embarked on a career in teaching; he taught cookery to teenagers at secondary school level. At the weekends, he worked as a sous chef and assisted on food photography shoots during the holidays.
After 8 years as a teacher, he decided to concentrate fully on food writing. Throughout his career he has specialised in recipe writing and he still loves to teach people how to cook (although he’s not quite as patient as he used to be!).
After travelling Europe searching for the best coffee shops, he landed the perfect role working across woman&home, Woman’s Weekly, Country Homes & Interiors, Livingetc, Homes & Gardens and GoodtoKnow. Along with the Test Kitchen team, he produces recipes and looks after the content for these magazines and websites and others in the Future portfolio.
Away from Future, Samuel is also Co-Vice Chair of the Guild of Food Writers and a Trustee of 91 Ways CIC. He can usually be found binge-watching TV shows, wandering a museum or escaping the city for greener and sunnier climates. He also dreams of buying a run-down Italian villa and turning it into a cookery school in the sun.
