Helen Mirren takes inspiration from Princess Diana with her stunning Oscars look

Last night the stars were out in force at the annual Oscars awards ceremony, celebrating the best in film over the last year.

And of course, no awards bash would be complete without attendance from the hugely popular Helen Mirren.

Dame Helen rocked up to the red carpet in a gorgeous, sheer pink gown, which perfectly complimented her signature white hairdo, and incredible, dark eye make-up.

But what really caught out eye about the actress's outfit was her stunning, glittery jewellery. Helen wowed with an ultra-blingy, diamond necklace, complete with matching earrings and bracelet.

And surprisingly, Helen's jewels actually have a very sweet connection to the royal family - a lovely coincidence given that one of her best known acting roles was as Queen Elizabeth II herself!

Over on her Instagram account, the 73-year-old revealed that the jewels were from none other than esteemed designer Harry Winston.

She wrote, 'and incase you missed it an astounding necklace ( and earrings and bracelet) from Harry Winston that I was so honoured to be able to wear. Thank you Harry Winston . You made me feel like a queen for the night!'

The British royal family have a long history with the American jeweller. Queen Elizabeth II first wore one of his designs in 1967, a necklace which was a gift from King Faisal during his visit to the UK.

The Queen was also keen to share the beautiful piece with her family, and would often loan it to her then daughter-in-law, Princess Diana. The late Princess of Wales often wore the necklace during formal occasions, and is here seen wearing it during a visit to Australia in 1983.

Most recently, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, wore the elegant jewellery item, to a dinner gala back in 2012. So it's clear that it's a treasured family heirloom.

But during the Oscars ceremony, Helen Mirren wasn't afraid to mix things up a bit when it came to her outfit, and paired her regal diamond jewellery with a pair of her favourite shoes - her 'stripper' Perspex heels.

Helen recently revealed that she often wears the stiletto-height platforms to awards ceremony, to give the appearance of being taller than her 5 feet 4 inches.

We reckon the actress looks gorgeous whatever she wears.
