But unlike other royals who have married in the past, like cousins Princes William and Harry, Princess Beatrice didn’t have to get permission from the Queen to get engaged.

Both Prince William and Prince Harry had to consult with their grandmother before getting engaged, to make sure that the monarch was happy with the royals’ choice of wives.

However, Princess Beatrice didn’t have to follow this protocol. And it’s all down to one law.

The Succession of The Crown Act states that the first six royals in line to the throne have to get their choice of husband or wife approved by the reigning monarch.

As Princess Beatrice is ninth in line to the throne, she didn’t have to seek permission from her grandmother.

When her younger sister Princess Eugenie married last year, she also didn’t have to ask for approval, as she is tenth in line to the throne.

Prince Harry is currently sixth in line to the throne, after dad Prince Charles, brother Prince William and his niece and two nephews, Princess Charlotte and Princes George and Louis.
