Prince William and Kate Middleton finally announce name of royal baby – and this is the meaning behind it

Kate Middleton has given birth to a little boy weighing 8lbs 7oz.

After days of speculation, Prince William and Kate Middleton have revealed the name of their new baby boy.

It was announced via the Kensington Palace Twitter account on Friday that the tot – who was born on Monday – has been called Louis Arthur Charles.

Louis is a special name in the Royal Family and has already been used as one of his older brother Prince George’s middle names. It’s also one of William’s names too, as is Arthur.

Presumably Louis is a reference to Prince Charles’ much-loved great uncle Louis Mountbatten too, the uncle of Prince Phillip who was assassinated in 1979.

Meanwhile the new Louis’ final middle name, Charles, is clearly in honour of his granddad Prince Charles, so all three names are very meaningful to the family.

The name quickly started trending on Twitter after being announced and many fans seem to like it.

“very cute even though i was rooting for arthur as a first name,” one social media user commented, whilst another wrote: “I love it, it’s such a lovely classy name”

And one added: “I love it! Welcome to the world Prince Louis Arthur Charles”

The name comes as quite a surprise after the bookies picked Alexander and Albert as favourites.

After the birth, Catherine and William adhered to tradition, proudly posing on the steps of the Lindo Wing with their new arrival. The happy couple looked thrilled to be sharing their moment with the world’s media and the legion of loyal fans, who have been camped outside St Mary’s for days.

Kate looked relaxed – yet as groomed as ever – in a pretty red Jenny Packham dress, sporting her signature bouncy blow dry. William, who was present for the birth, stood proudly by her side, joking with the crowd- “thrice the worry now!”

The news of the birth was announced on the official Twitter page for the royals on Monday.

The full tweet read, ‘The baby weighs 8lbs 7oz.  The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth.

‘The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.

‘Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.’

According to the tweets, Catherine, mum to her third child, is doing well, and husband Prince William was present at the birth too.

Another tweet confirmed that the news had officially been delivered to the rest of the royal family.

The new Prince of Cambridge is fifth in line to the throne and a younger sibling to Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Landmarks around London have joined in celebrating the birth of the third royal baby, with the BT Tower in London lighting up in blue to display the news.

The Prime Minister, Theresa May, has also offered her ‘warmest congratulations’ the couple.

Given that William is one of just two siblings, and Catherine is one of three, could a third baby be the perfect final child for the Duke and Duchess?
