Why Catherine and Meghan wear tiaras – but Beatrice and Eugenie never do

Perhaps one of the obvious perks of being a member of the royal family is the chance to wear some of the most luxurious jewellery in the world.

And we’ll often see the Duchess of Cambridge wear perhaps the most lavish, glittering pieces of jewellery of them all – the tiara.

Catherine wore her first on her wedding day back in 2011, and has since been seen donning one from the royal family collection on numerous occassions.

Duchess Meghan has also worn her very first headpiece, Queen Mary’s bandeau tiara – on her May 19th wedding day to Prince Harry.

But two members of the royal family who have never been seen donning a sparkly headpiece are the York sisters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice.

While the pair are known for their extravagant hat choices – for example, at Catherine and William’s wedding – they’ve never been seen to wear a tiara, despite attending countless royal engagements throughout their entire lives.

But apparently, there is a good reason for the absence of headwear when it comes to the Princesses. According to jewellery expert Geoffrey Munn, speaking to Town and Country magazine, it’s because Beatrice and Eugenie are not yet married.

He revealed, “any woman may wear one, but ancient tradition has it that they must be a bride or already married.”

Geoffrey went on to explain, “The tiara has its roots in classical antiquity and was seen as an emblem of the loss of innocence to the crowning of love.

“One of the mainstays of European royalty and aristocracy is to do what you have always done and formal dress, jewellery, and tiaras are just part of this.”

However, there’s likely another reason why the York Princesses have never been spotted in a tiara. The pair are not considered to be senior, working members of royal family, despite being the Queen’s granddaughters.

As such, they will rarely, if ever, be required to attend formal royal events that warrant wearing a tiara.

For example, the Duchess of Cambridge has really only worn a tiara to state banquets or diplomatic receptions at Buckingham Palace – events Eugenie and Beatrice would not be required to attend.

However, it’s is expected that we’ll see Princess Eugenie wearing her very first tiara soon – at her royal wedding on 12th October.

Royal fans have speculated that Eugenie could pay touching tribute to her mother Sarah Ferguson with her choice of tiara, by wearing the very same one she wore on her wedding day back in 1986.

The Duchess of York’s headpiece was gifted to her by the Queen, and was made by jewellers Garrard.
