Megan Fox's engagement ring has caused quite a stir since the star unveiled her unique piece of jewelry designed by her soon-to-be husband Machine Gun Kelly.

Machine Gun Kelly (aka Colson Baker) took to social media to post a video of the unusual engagement ring on his fiancée's finger.

In the caption, the artist explained the rings unique design, "I know tradition is one ring, but I designed it with Stephen Webster to be two: the emerald (her birthstone) and the diamond (my birthstone) set on two magnetic bands of thorns that draw together as two halves of the same soul forming the obscure heart that is our love."

Megan's engagement ring is one of the many recent celerity rings that show the new trend that leans towards more unique and quirky style rings and suggests that old-fashioned rings such as Kate Middleton's iconic sapphire ring are no longer fashionable.

Both of Princess Anne’s engagement rings broke royal protocol as they both featured sapphire stones which were considered an unusual stone to include in an engagement ring when she was married in the early '70s and again in the early '90s.

Despite royal disapproval of her rings, the Princess Royal paved the way for sapphires to feature on engagement rings which lead to one of the most iconic pieces of Princess Diana's jewelry becoming a worldwide sensation.

Princess Diana's engagement ring is one of the most beloved rings and was a trendsetting piece when Diana was first engaged to Prince Charles.

Although Prince Charles and Diana's relationship ended in divorce, the ring was later given to the Duchess of Cambridge who has now been the owner of this ring for over a decade.

Although sapphires may have been unique when Princess Diana was given the ring, the jewelry piece was so popular that the style has now become unoriginal.

More recent engagement announcements from both celebrities and royals have shown off the quirky trend that favors unusual rings like Megan Fox, rather than styles and colors similar to the Duchess of Cambridge's famous ring.

Lady Gaga's engagement rings

As the star of House of Gucci and an established fashion icon, it is not a surprise that Lady Gaga's engagement rings have been as unique as she is.

When Lady Gaga was first engaged to Taylor Kinney in 2015, the star wore a heart-shaped diamond ring that shunned conventional gem-cut styles.

Although the diamond was a traditional clear white color, the unique cut suited Lady Gaga's unconventional style and fashion sense. Sadly the heart-shaped diamond ring was soon cast aside as Lady Gaga and Taylor broke up and ended their engagement.

In 2019 when Lady Gaga announced her engagement to talent agent Christian Carino, the star went for an equally unique ring in a totally different style.

The artist opted for a unique large pink engagement ring that was surrounded by delicate white diamonds. Although the style of this ring is rather familiar, the enormous size and color of the gemstone set this style apart from other more classically designed engagement rings.

Princess Eugenie's engagement ring

Lady Gaga's opulent ring is not dissimilar from Princess Eugenie's rare 'lotus blossom' sapphire engagement ring which has a particularly significant meaning to the royal. But while Eugenie's shares the same pink hue, Lady Gaga's was a much larger, almost cocktail-style engagement ring.

Like her mother Sarah Ferguson, Princess Eugenie chose a light-pink color gemstone which is still considered an unusual color of choice when it comes to engagement rings. The Princess also assisted in designing her ring from husband Jack Brooksbank which could also explain the ring's modern design.

Katy Perry's engagement ring

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom announced their engagement in 2019 after Orlando popped the question on February 14 aka Valentine's Day. Like Gaga and Princess Eugenie, Katy also opted for a pink gemstone at the center of her ring.

The photo announcing Katy and Orlando's engagement was captioned 'full bloom' which was likely a reference to her soon-to-be husband's surname, and the flower-shaped style of her ring.

On another adorable note, the couple later had their first daughter together and named her Daisy. It seems that flowers are a key theme in their relationship and their ring only strengthens the symbolism of their marriage and family.

Ariana Grande's engagement ring

Popstar Ariana Grande also surprised fans with her unique pearl and diamond engagement ring when she announced her engagement to Dalton Gomez.

This style of ring divided some fans as some felt that although individually the pearl and diamond were beautiful, together the ring felt less like an engagement ring and more like a statement piece of jewelry.

Regardless of the negative press, it seems that eccentric and distinctive is the new trend when it comes to engagement rings and traditional styles and cuts have pretty much gone out of the window.
