Have you heard that skinny jeans are back? For the last few years, my pair were consigned to the darkest depths of my wardrobe, but no more. The fashion contingent has declared its return.
As a devotee, it is music to my ears - but then I never gave up on my skinny, preferably high-waisted, jeans. My loyalty has been unwavering. This has extended to what I wear hiking, walking, and camping (alongside my best walking shoes) since I was introduced to ACAI, an outdoor clothing brand.
This brand's outdoor clothing is designed specifically for women, and it includes a range of skinny trousers, or ‘Outdoor Skinnies,’ that resemble skinny jeans. They cinch you in, but are shower resistant (ideal for spring showers), snag-proof (so you are ready to scramble in all seasons), and stretchy and breathable.
As my family and friends can testify, I have more or less lived in these hiking trousers for women, for all sorts of activities and occasions. At £89, they are not the cheapest, but I reckoned the cost per wear makes them a steal, or that is what I told myself at least.
The Acai Womens Max Stretch Skinny Outdoor Trousers are available direct from Acai, as well as at various retailers.
ACAI Max Stretch Skinny Outdoor Trousers review
Design
By my own admission, I am a bit unadventurous when it comes to colour. My wardrobe, particularly my workout tops and gym leggings, is predominantly black. Thankfully, the MAX trousers are available in said colour, and this was the one I opted for.
However, there is a wide range of colourway options, including the darker-toned Deep Navy, Graphite and Forest Green, and I would happily opt for any of those as well. For those who prefer brighter tones or are looking for something lighter for spring and summer, there are also Storm Grey and Nightshadow Blue, Mineral Blue and Riverside options, although stock is currently more limited.
ACAI’s inclusive sizing is a standout feature. It ranges from a UK 6 to 22 and offers different leg lengths, including petite (P), regular (R), tall (L) and extra tall (XL). I chose a 14(R) and found there was plenty of give. Cinching is one thing, but no one wants trousers that prevent them from breathing properly.
The Acai Women's Max Stretch Skinny Outdoor Trousers can be paired with trainers, walking, shoes, or even hiking sandals for a complete weekend outfit.
As you would expect from their name, these hiking trousers for women feel super stretchy, so they're easy to get on and super comfortable to walk in and sit in, whether you are perched somewhere mid-hike or relaxing in a beer garden.
The four-way stretch works with you, so you can move about without feeling constrained. I have been scrambling up and down rocks and tackling uphill and downhill terrain in them, and would say they provide the comfort and snugness of leggings.
They are also super light, not only to wear, but to pack in a rucksack for an early morning walk. This also comes in handy if you are heading away for the weekend, or on a longer hike and want to take spare clothing. Made from shower-resistant softshell fabric, which is 89% nylon and 11% elastane, they are machine washable (at 30 degrees) and ideal for the UK’s temperamental weather. Plus, they are snag-proof, so durable enough to withstand skirting over rocks, stiles and uneven ground. Many a time, I have found myself shuffling down a steep hillside on my backside, and these have held strong, so they get a thumbs up from me.
The extra detailing is noteworthy too, such as the rose gold buttons, belt hooks, zip and button fastening, and the handy pockets deep on the front. One of the two pockets on the back is also zipped for extra security. But it's the overall look and feel that impresses me, and why I find them so versatile, taking me from the trail to town.
What are the Max Stretch Skinny Trousers like to wear?
A decade ago, it would have been impossible to find trousers like these MAX skinnies for outdoor adventures. You would typically opt for gym leggings with pockets and hope for the best. Or, if the weather was looking particularly fierce, reach for those universally unflattering waterproof trousers (you know the ones - they resemble rustling bin liners). I’ve worn them in the past and didn’t feel particularly great, but reminded myself “it’s not a fashion show,” and got on with it. Those days are long gone with this new era of hiking trousers for women.
These hardworking skinny trousers are super light and stretchy, so you feel cinched in and supported with the high waist and snug fit, but I find I can still move easily, and there is no superfluous material flapping about in the elements. I have got caught in spring showers, and the water droplets have just bounced off, which means my legs have stayed dry. I have not been unfortunate enough to be walking in a heavy downpour, yet, but I can imagine they would dry quickly.
Importantly, I feel confident in them. Not only because they tick all the practical boxes, but I feel like me. And feeling confident in what you are wearing, whether it is trainers, leggings or a new fleece, undeniably gives you a boost.
What seasons can you wear the ACAI Skinny Jeans in?
I would class these trousers as an all-rounder. They provide enough coverage to keep you warm in cooler months, especially when paired with a warm fleece or body warmer, while the water-resistant fabric keeps you dry during spring and summer rainfall.
Equally, the lightweight, moisture-wicking material is handy as temperatures begin to rise, especially when paired with a T-shirt or vest top. On particularly cold days, you could opt for the Thermal Skinny Outdoor Trousers. They look similar on the outside but have a thermal fleece lining. Likewise, on hotter days, walking or running shorts, of course, might feel preferable.
But the MAX’s adaptability is one of their key features. Looking at the reviews, women have worn them to Everest Base Camp and to winter coaching sessions, as well as on regular hikes and simply out and about.
To date, I have paired them with hiking boots, trainers, sandals and flipflops. I have worn them on breezy beach walks in Cornwall, next to a campfire in Scotland, while getting groceries and enjoying pub lunches, on flat dog walks around the park and on many walks across the Pennine moorlands. Safe to say, you get your money’s worth.
Other hiking trousers for women I recommend
Material: 88% Polyamide and 12% Elastane
Sizing: UK 8-18
These reasonably priced trousers are water resistant, lightweight, boast four-way stretch fabric, which allows for plenty of movement. High waisted, like the ACAI trousers, these are also tapered, so not quite as snug fitting around the hips and legs, which might be more desirable depending on personal preference. Available in two colours (black and khaki), there are pockets on the front, as well as a zipped pocket on the back, and a zip and button fastening. Sizing ranges from 8 to 18 but, unlike the ACAI trousers, these trousers only come in a regular length.
Material: 93% Polyamide and 7% Elastane
Sizing: UK 8-20
Available in black and grey, these versatile trousers can be worn out on longer walks or just running errands. Moisture-wicking, breathable, and with a water repellent finish, they can be worn comfortably in many reasonable conditions, but they are not made with serious ‘outdoorsing’ in mind. They are sized from 8 to 20 but don’t offer different leg lengths, and there's no zipped pocket on the front or back of the trousers. They have a similar shape to the ACAI MAX skinnies, but are £10 less (£40 less if you are a GoOutdoors member), which is something to keep in mind.
Material: 93% Polyester and 7% Elastane
Sizing: UK 8-20
As the name suggests, these skinny trousers are made with everyday needs in mind. Notably, these are two-way stretch (horizontal), not four-way (horizontal and vertical), so there isn’t quite as much give as other trousers, but they are still comfortable to wear, and they also wick moisture. There are four pockets in total, none are zipped, and the front two have a mesh-like material inside, which I actually like as there is not as much material to bunch.
The fastening has a zip and a popper, and there are belt hooks, too. It is worth noting that, like ACAI, the sizing includes different leg lengths (29, 31 and 33 inches), but these trousers are only available in black and dark blue, making them a more traditional option.
