Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have surprised US military volunteers in California after gifting them dozens of food parcels and a letter of gratitude.
The Mission Continues, an organization that encourages veterans to contribute to their community after deployment, was delighted to receive the generous donation on Saturday.
“We'd like to send a huge thank you to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, along with Archewell Foundation, for fueling the volunteers of our LA Service Platoon with lunch yesterday, so they can continue their hard work at the Compton VFW and help those living in the Compton community!” the organization posted in an update on their Instagram page. The Mission Continues also shared a photograph of the royal couple’s letter, as well as two images of the volunteers with their food parcels.
The letter, which was typed in large black font on plain white paper, acknowledged the hard work of The Mission Continues “in honour of this day of service, and in recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and all that he stood for.”
Harry and Meghan’s plans to volunteer with the veterans were also revealed in the message. “Thank you for your service - today and everyday. We look forward to joining you soon!”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who have kept a low profile since quitting social media last year, were showered with praise for their thoughtful gesture by The Mission Continues’ followers. The update also brought increased attention to the organization, clocking up over ten times the amount of ‘likes’ than its previous post.
Harry, who relocated to California with Meghan last March, is no stranger to military life. The 36-year-old has ten years’ experience in the Army, having first joined at the age of 19. He officially left active service in 2014 but continues to help his former comrades through supporting projects that reintegrate veterans into the community.
