Harry and Meghan's Oprah interview Emmy nomination has royal fans divided

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were caught in the eye of a media storm following their bombshell Oprah interview last March—and it looks like they're about to be blown back into it. 

The CBS special, which saw the couple publicly discuss their withdrawal from the Royal Family for the first time, received an overwhelming response from fans and critics alike, pulling on over 17m viewers during its US premiere. 

It has now been nominated for an Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series Or Special Emmy, alongside VICE's Showtime and Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy. My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman and United Shades Of America With W. Kamau Bell are also in the running for the prestigious television award. 

Royal fans have been quick to share their thoughts on the Emmy nomination online—and, unsurprisingly, the reaction has been fairly polarized. 

Supporters of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have welcomed the news, with many taking to Twitter to congratulate the couple on the milestone achievement. 

"I am sorry guys but I am actually more happy the Meghan and Harry interview with Oprah was nominated for the #Emmys than I thought I would be," one fan wrote. 

Another person praised the couple for the difficult issues they raised in the interview —including the alleged racism within Buckingham Palace. Meghan and Harry made shocking comments about Archie that made Oprah gasp in horror during the two-hour-long program, revealing that concerns had been expressed by an unnamed royal over the potential color of their unborn son's skin. 

"Meghan and Harry interview with Oprah blew the gasket open on the racism in the RF [Royal Family] and England. The football match held on Sunday [Euro 2020 finals] showed exactly what they wished to deny. Now that same interview is nominated for an Emmy," the passionate fan wrote. 

Not everybody was pleased with the accolade though. A petition has been launched by Orange County native Crystal Martin to cancel the Emmy nomination, on the grounds that numerous claims in the interview have "unequivocally been proven false." The appeal has garnered over 1,000 names since it went live last night, as well as a number of critical comments by its signees. 

"They lied and manipulated the public and should not be rewarded for it. Oprah did a horrible job interviewing her [sic]," one person wrote. 

"Because awards should be held to a higher standard. Lies should not be rewarded and shoddy journalism should not be rewarded," another signee posted. 

The Emmys, who have not responded to the petition, is set to air on Sunday, 19 September at 8 pm on CBS.
