Queen’s TV special set to air the same day as Harry and Meghan’s ‘tell-all’ interview

The Queen’s Commonwealth Day special message will reportedly air on the same day as Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s interview with Oprah Winfrey. 

• Duchess Meghan is doing a “tell-all” interview with Oprah Winfrey, joined by Prince Harry.
• It’s been reported that the Queen’s Commonwealth Day special will air the same day as the Sussexes’ interview.

Last week proved a momentous week for the Royal Family, as Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex first revealed they are expecting baby number two. Royal fans might already be wondering how the British line of succession will change after Prince Harry and Meghan's next baby. This happy family news came after the birth of Princess Eugenie’s son - whose adorable name is inspired by royal relatives. 

Whilst speculation over a possible baby announcement for Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan has been rife before and since she wrote of her devastating miscarriage last summer, a second Sussex reveal was possibly more of a surprise. Last week also came the confirmation that the Duchess of Sussex will give a “tell-all” interview with talk show host Oprah Winfrey that will air in March. She will discuss everything from motherhood to marriage and be joined for part of the conversation by Prince Harry. 

This is understood to be the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first public interview since stepping back as senior members of the Royal Family last year. It’s now been confirmed that they have decided to permanently step down as working royals.

However whilst fans across the world are no doubt eager to hear what the couple have to say, they may be facing some royal competition. 

According to Metro.co.uk, the Queen is set to take part in a special TV show celebrating the Commonwealth hours before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Oprah interview is aired in America on Sunday, March 7 at 8pm. 

The publication reports that other senior royals will join the 94-year-old monarch in the special annual message ‘A Celebration For Commonwealth Day’, including many of the royals who are thought to make up the Queen’s so-called “Firm of Eight”.

Prince Charles, Duchess Camilla, Prince William, Duchess Kate and Sophie, Countess of Wessex will all reportedly take part in the show which will be broadcast on BBC One at 7pm on Sunday night.

What is the Commonwealth Day Service?

Commonwealth Day is the annual celebration of the Commonwealth of Nations and this year due to the ongoing effects of the pandemic, the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey has been canceled for the first time in many years. The Queen is the symbolic head of the Commonwealth and it’s thought that she holds this important role in high regard. She delivers an address to the Commonwealth that is then broadcast across the world.

The Commonwealth Day Service was also the final official royal engagement the Duke and Duchess of Sussex undertook before stepping back as senior members of the Royal Family last year. 

The couple have since settled in America and it’s now been some time since the Queen saw her grandson or his family in person.

The official Buckingham Palace statement announcing that the couple would not be returning as working royals ended by reiterating the important message that: “While we all are saddened by their decision, The Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family.”
