If you've binged all of Yellowstone and you are now hunting for some similar shows to quench your thirst for Dutton drama, there are a number of fantastic series to sink your teeth into.
The final episode of Yellowstone season 4 was released in January 2022, and while fans know that Yellowstone season 5 will premiere on Paramount Plus on Sunday, November 13 - this is still quite a long time to wait!
So if you are looking for a series to watch in the months between the summer and the fall, here are a few shows that you may be interested in...
Outer Range is modern-day, science fiction western drama that stars Josh Brolin and Imogen Poots. The plot focuses on Royal Abbott, a Wyoming rancher who discovers a strange black void on his land, soon after the arrival of a drifter named Autumn.
Like Yellowstone, this series is set in the modern-day at a ranch in the US. The show has a supernatural element that distinguishes itself from the Yellowstone series, but many comparisons have been made between the two series.
Defending the suggestion that Outer Range is 'piggybacking' off the success of Yellowstone, Josh Brolin said in an interview with Variety (opens in new tab), "Yellowstone was the first - like we were with True Grit - in bringing back the Western, and that’s a great thing. If you piggyback on that trend, you feel like you are piggybacking,” he said.
"But if you are coming with something within the genre that’s wholly original, then you feel good about it. There’s nothing other than horses and cowboy hats and maybe warring families in Outer Range that reminds me of Yellowstone," Josh concluded.
Outer Range is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
1883 is a spin-off of Yellowstone and like the original series, this show follows the Dutton family, but an earlier generation of the family. The series follows the post-Civil war generation of the Dutton family on their journey to establish the Yellowstone ranch in Montana.
The show stars Sam Elliot as Shea Brennan, Tim McGraw as James Dutton, Faith Hill as Margaret Dutton, and Isabel May as Elsa Dutton.
There is also set to be another Yellowstone spin-off titled 1932, which is set it - you guessed it - 1932. Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford have teamed up for this exciting TV franchise and are set to be the main characters in this upcoming series.
Paramount + announced in a statement at the time, "The next Yellowstone origin story will introduce a new generation of the Dutton family and explore the early twentieth century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home."
1883 is available to watch on Paramount +, as will 1932 when it is released at a later date to be confirmed.
The Son is a TV series that ran from 2017 to 2018. The show is set in 1915 and stars Pierce Brosnan as Eli McCullough, a powerful Texas cattle baron who turns into an oilman.
The show focuses on Eli's struggle for power as he tries to maintain his business empire in order to pass it down to his family, including his sons and grandchildren.
Like Yellowstone, this series is a western drama, but it is set in the past. This show also focuses on family drama and struggles between native American tribes and white settlers stealing land from those tribes.
The Son is available to watch on Hulu.
Succession is not a western drama, but like Yellowstone, this series focuses on a family that is struggling for power and control. The modern comedy-drama stars Kieran Culkin, Matthew MacFadyen, and Nicholas Braun, who are all members of the Roy family.
The Roy family are owners of media conglomerate Waystar RoyCo and the series focuses on their conflict within the family as they all struggle for control over the company.
Succession is available to watch on HBO Max.
Michelle Dockery, who played Lady Mary in Downton Abbey A New Era, stars in Godless, a western drama set in 1884. The plot focuses on an outlaw on the run from his vengeful mentor, who finds sanctuary in the small New Mexico town La Belle. After a mining accident, the town is populated almost entirely by women who are left to defend the town.
The cast includes Jack O'Connell as the outlaw Roy Goode, and Jeff Daniels as Frank Griffin who is on the hunt for Roy.
The series is western drama series like Yellowstone, and also features a stellar cast of actors. The miniseries was critically acclaimed in 2017 during it's release, and Vanity Fair and The Washington Post both considered the series within the top 10 releases of the year.
All seven episodes of the limited series, Godless, are available to watch on Netflix.
