Angelyne on Peacock tells the story of a Hollywood legend known for her self-bought billboards, Barbie doll looks, and, "being famous for being famous." Little was known about her origin story until a journalist delved into her past in a now-famous article.
Long before the likes of Paris Hilton and the Kardashians became reality royalty, Angelyne created the genre. Known for her blonde bombshell style, paired with the best pink dresses, huge billboards, and bubblegum-colored Corvettes - her story is stranger than fiction.
She's a bit of a hometown hero, to the people of LA, but her star never quite breached the city limits. However, when The Hollywood Reporter published an article by Gary Baum - everything changed.
The biopic series, from Peacock, stars Emmy Rossum in the titular role and is sure to be one of the most talked-about shows for some time. Here's everything you need to know about the real Angelyne, the show, and how you can watch it.
Who is Angelyne?
According to Collider, Angelyne was in a punk rock band during the late 70s, which never took off. So, instead of sitting around idle, she decided to become an idol instead.
She released her first billboard back in 1984. The billboard, the first of many, featured her posing in front of her name, with no information whatsoever. Obviously, these high glam billboards took LA by storm - mysterious as they were.
As the buzz began, so did her celebrity life, and she appeared on TV shows, in films, and even released her own albums too. By 1995, she had more than 200 billboards all over the city. Angelyne became known for her trademark look, as well as driving around LA in a pink Corvette.
According to the Cinemaholic, In 2002, she ran as a candidate for the Hollywood city council and then in 2003 from Los Angeles, in the gubernatorial recall election. Her slogan was, “We’ve had Gray, we’ve had Brown, now it’s time for some blonde and pink." Despite her efforts, Angelyne received 2,536 votes, finishing 28th out of 135 candidates.
Despite her visibility and being so well known, little to nothing was actually known about her past. That was until The Hollywood Reporter article revealed her painful past.
Born in 1950 in Poland, named Ronia Tamar Goldberg, Angelyne is the daughter of Holocaust survivors. Her parents moved the family to America, eventually settling in LA where Angelyne grew up and became who she is today.
Despite official legal documents, personal testimony, and photographic evidence - she maintains that the person Gary Baum claims she is, is incorrect.
Where is Angelyne now?
Angelyne is still very much in her hometown of LA, riding around in her pink Corvette. She manages her fan club, still has her eyes on politics, and is eager to make her own film about her story.
"I had a little glimpse of it, and I refuse to watch it. It doesn’t do me justice. Would you be flattered if someone played you and misrepresented you?” Angelyne told Inside Edition.
What is the Angelyne show about?
The five-part series is based on the Hollywood Reporter article and focuses on who she was before she became Angelyne, her family's past, and how she became the persona she is today.
Before you watch the show, you should know that this biopic hasn't been authorized by Angelyne and that she still claims that the famous article, revealing her past, isn't true.
Speaking to the Guardian she said, "There’s only one Angelyne, and I’m concerned that show might mislead people.” She also revealed that, despite being asked to speak to the team behind the show and even being offered an executive producer role, she refused.
“But they gave me a lot of money – millions," she said. "Because my name is trademarked. They couldn’t do it without me."
How to watch Angelyne
Angelyne premieres on May 19, 2022 and is a Peacock limited series and is only available on the streaming service. In the US, subscribers can pay $4.99 a month or to the ad-free Peacock Plus tier for $9.99 a month to watch it and other hit shows.
