The best Diptyque candles are sumptuous scented delights that will transform the ambiance and overall scent of your home while raising approving looks from serious candle aficionados. Hand-poured by the perfumiers at the popular French brand, these high-quality and much-coveted candles are worth every penny.

Diptyque is a luxurious Parisian fragrance brand, founded by Christiane Montadre-Gautrot, Yves Coueslant, and Desmond Knox-Leet back in 1961. With the brand's original boutique still situated at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain (hence the branding and labeling), in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, they still produce some of the best candles around—as well as eau de parfums, eau de toilettes, and perfume oil diffusers.

And the brand has scents for all preferences, whether you tend to lean towards floral aromas, you prefer something herbal, or a warm scent is your favorite to adorn your home with. Their candles come in a range of weights, from 70g to 1.5kg—though not all scents can be purchased in all five sizes. With an impressive burn time starting from 20 hours for the 70g size, rising to 120 hours for a 1.5kg size, rest assured you'll find something to suit your room size, budget, and scent preference with the best Diptyque candles. Made from paraffin wax and hand-poured into similarly decorated iconic vessels, Diptyque is known for its unique and top-quality products.

So we were of course keen to hunt out the very best Diptyque candles out there from their huge selection. Our three best Diptyque candles have to be the bestselling Baies, which is the perfect balance of fruity and floral—and it comes in a huge 1.5kg size. The Roses Candle is our top pick for lighting in springtime, with notes of sweet roses and jasmine. And we also rate the Narguilé scent as the best option for lighting during or before fall, thanks to its unique aroma of honey and tobacco, mixed with an underlying base of lilies.

How we chose the best Diptyque candles

Why you can trust Woman & Home Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test.

We chose these Diptyque candles below based on our own tests, which ones are bestsellers, and how well they might suit different people's scent desires. Our testing criteria is as follows:

  • The scent of each one and who it might appeal to—we also considered the scent and notes of each candle, and who might generally prefer each one. Based on the scent, we also assessed when the best time of year would be to light each fragrance.
  • Sizes and burn time —then, we made sure to check the sizes each one is available in, which ultimately correlates to their burn time.
  • What forms each scent comes in—all of the below scents are available in candle form, but Diptyque also offers some of their scents in other formats, including diffuser reeds, scented ovals, and in-room sprays. We've noted which ones come in different forms below.

It goes without saying that all of Diptyque's bestselling candles are on our list below, as well as the best Diptyque candles for spring, fall, winter—and the best options for those on a budget.

May be too strong for a bedroom

Diptyque's Baies is their bestselling candle and for good reason—it smells divine and it's exactly the blend of floral and fruity goodness you'd want to smell inside your home. It has notes of Bulgarian roses, blended with blackcurrant leaves and buds, and then topped with ambergris. A unique concoction, that's for sure, and our top pick of the best smelling Diptyque candles you can buy.

We'd say to light this candle in spring or summer, in either your hallway or your living area. We reckon it might be a tad too strong for a bedroom, and having it in a hallway will encourage the scent to subtly flood each and every room in your home. As with all other Diptyque candles, Baies comes in a branded glass vessel—though, since it is a bestseller, it's available in five sizes ranging from a 70g mini candle to a 1.5kg indoor and outdoor candle.

You can also purchase Baies as an in-room spray, car diffuser and reed diffuser form, as well as a scented oval, to hang in your wardrobe or closet to gradually release scent around your clothes and more. What could be better than having this gorgeous scent dotted all around your home?

Doesn't come in the bigger size

The Rose candle from Diptyque is their iconic floral blend, and you probably guessed the scent from the name—roses! It's not just floral, though, with fresh notes from the jasmine also blended in to ensure it's far from boring. Interestingly, it smells similar to potpourri, although in a much more authentic way.

We rate the rose candle as the best Diptyque candle for spring—light this candle just before those first flowers begin to bloom in early spring, and let its aroma fill your home. If you want your home to smell like you've just bought and cut a few fresh (and rather sizeable) rose bouquets and displayed one in each room, that is. This, too, comes poured into a decorative Diptyque glass vessel. It also comes in three sizes including 70g, 190g, and 600g. Choose the latter for a whopping 70-hour burn time. However, it doesn't come in the huge, 1.5kg size, which is an important point to note. Roses also come in the form of a perfumed bracelet, a hair mist, a car diffuser, a reed diffuser, eau de toilette, hand and body lotion, hand creme, scented oval, shower foam, travel spray, and many more items.

Fall is all about lighting candles and keeping cozy, so you'll want to nail it with something from Diptyque—and we've found just the aroma. Diptyque's Narguilé is expertly fit for cozy, chilly fall days with warm and spicy notes of honey and tobacco, mixed with an underlying base of lilies to balance and smooth the scent.

It's not too overpowering either, which can often be a problem when it comes to spicy candles. We suggest lighting this candle come late September and all throughout October, and if you've still some left, at the start of November it would go down a treat, too. This candle comes in only one size though, which is a bit of a drawback. The only size available is 190g, which has a burn time of 60 hours (which is pretty significant) The Narguilé fragrance only comes in one form as well, a candle.

Diptyque Feu de Bois Candle

The Diptyque Feu de Bois is another bestseller for the brand, and we can see why. The scent is the epitome of wintertime, boasting a strong yet welcoming spicy, woody smell that only seems fit to be burnt in the festive month of December. Essentially, it smells like a cozy roaring fire on a cold day. That's why we've rated it our best smelling Diptyque candle for lighting in the winter.

It's scented with essential oils for a powerful, calming aroma (if you like the sound of this read our guide to the best aromatherapy candles). Luckily enough, this fragrance comes in four sizes including a 1.5kg jar that can be lit indoors or out—and there's a limited edition one that comes presented in a golden vessel. So there are plenty of size options to choose from. Unfortunately, Feu de Bois comes only in candle form though, so you can't use this scent everywhere.

Can be very strong

Diptyque sell a whole range of 'Discovery Size' candles that all come in 70g glass vessels, and these candles are the most budget-friendly that Diptyque stock. Though there are lots of scents to choose from, we would pick the spicy Pomander as one to buy if you are on a budget and have to choose one scent.

Besides the bestsellers, which we think are worthy of purchasing in a larger size, this scent is ideal for the smaller 70g size—it's strong so you won't want to light it too much, and burning it for a small amount of time gives off maximum impact. With notes of candied orange peels, scented cloves, and fruits, it also basically screams winter. Though small, it even has an impressive burn time of 70g, and it would make an ideal Christmas gift. Pomander comes only in the form of a candle.

Diptyque Ambre Candle

Not good for summer use

Another bestselling scent from Diptyque, Ambre is one of those candles that you just can't quite explain to anyone. One word we can use to describe it is captivating—any guests to your home will be sure to comment on its uniqueness, whether lit or unlit as it's that powerful. As you might have guessed from the name, the immediate notes of this candle are amber, with subtle notes of musk and balsams.

The Ambra somehow manages to be sweet yet spicy, making it the perfect burn for both autumn and wintertime. Because of this, Ambre takes the spot as our best unique Diptyque candle. This candle comes in two sizes—70g and 300g, with a burn time of 30 hours or 75 hours. You can also purchase Ambre as a room spray, as well as a diffuser insert for an essential oil diffuser (take a look at our guide to the best essentials oils if you want to know how to use them properly).

The luxe-looking 34 Boulevard Saint Germain candle (created for Diptyque's 50th anniversary) is a nod to the brand's original boutique, situated on 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris. And it smells as elegant as it looks—with fresh, green, and spicy notes from raw ingredients including damp mosses, crumpled blackcurrant leaves, sun-dried fig leaves.

We love that it's encased within a white handmade ceramic vessel, which will add a touch of class and elegance to any home, and ensure it makes for a gorgeous gift idea. We say you can burn this candle at any time of the year, but in particular during the change of seasons, for a fresh aroma in your home to signal the changing weather. It comes in only one size, and that one size is a big one weighing 220g and with a burn time of 70 hours. You can also find 34 Boulevard Saint Germain as a room spray, solid perfume, diffuser, scented oval, eau de toilette, and an eau de parfum.

Won't be around for long

The new scent of summer, Diptyque's Citronelle candle is the epitome of fresh with delicate lemongrass accords. It's the perfect balance of floral, citrusy, and spicy, a scent that will transport you straight to the Mediterranean (if only in your mind) every time. We suggest lighting this candle on a summer's evening—the larger size is even outdoor-friendly so it can help bat off mosquitos when al fresco dining.

Both sizes of this candle have been decorated by artist Luke Edward Hall, in color—a contrast to Diptyque's standard style. We'd argue that illustration is slightly more captivating on the larger, ceramic-encased candle. Speaking of sizes, it comes in 190g and 1.5kg, with a burn time of 60 hours or 120 hours. You can also buy Citronnelle as a delightful summer body spray, made using essential oils—so you can carry your favorite scent with you wherever you go.

Genévrier in French actually translates to juniper, so this would be an ideal buy for any gin lovers out there, or as a gift for a gin lover in your life. With spicy, smoky notes, the aroma this candle lets off is impressively complex—think bitter citrus peels, fragrant juniper berries, cedarwood, guaiac wood, fir balsam, and even cypress. While the scent might be overwhelming to some, others will certainly adore it.

This is a candle we would definitely burn in late summer, early autumn, a season that seems to suit the scent. It comes in only one size though—190g—which has a burn time of 60 hours. The Genévrier scent also comes in just candle form too, unfortunately.

Diptyque Thé Candle

A strong burn perfect for a cozy evening or a chilly day, Diptyque's Thé is the ideal combination of spicy and warm. It's intense yet not too overpowering and boasts an attractive masculine aroma of tea and leather. With black tea undertones and notes of spices including cumin, coriander, and pepper, it's certainly distinctive, and be perfectly suited to people who don't necessarily enjoy floral fragrances.

Thé was actually one of the first three Diptyque candles ever made, so you might even say that it's to thank for the brand's popularity. It comes in one size only—190g, which has a burn time of 60 hours. Light this candle in a spacious, airy room and it will easily impress your guests—perfect for a home office, games room, or hallway. You can only grab this scent in the form of a candle though, just a note.

The calming, balancing scent of eucalyptus has always been popular, which is why we were pleasantly surprised to find out that Diptyque has bottled it up and poured it into the form of a candle. Diptyque's Eucalyptus Candle is by far our best Diptyque candle if you are after something fresh.

Herbal by nature, this lively scent would be perfectly suited to a bathroom or a bedroom—it also has notes of oak trees as a nod to the outdoors. It comes in just one size, 190g, and is poured in a classic Diptyque glass vessel. It has a 60 hour burn time, too. We guarantee this would make a lovely gift for the fussy gift-receiver in your life too, as the fresh herbal scent is a hard one to dislike. However, this Diptyque option only comes in candle form.

Can be strong

The floral Mimosa candle by Diptyque evokes the yellow mimosa buds found on the French Riviera, from late January to March. With added notes of violet, this perfumed scent is strong and decorative, and even has a hint of honey to make it smell sweet. We reckon it would make a faultless addition to a living room—although you make want to avoid burning it in a bedroom due to the strength of the smell. It's available in two sizes including a mini candle, so you can choose a burn time of 20 hours or 60 hours. In our opinion, the mini candle is a great option for gift-giving too, as it means you can bag a normally pricey Diptyque candle for a far-reduced price. Housed inside the classic Diptyque glass jar with Mimosa labeling, this scent also comes in the form of a diffuser insert, a diffuser refill, and a room spray.

Diptyque Vanille Candle

If you are a lover of anything vanilla-scented, then this best Diptyque candle is the one for you. This scent belongs to the spiced family of candles, with top notes of black vanilla pods that are super fragrant, and base notes that are both leathery and smoky.

It's a quirky and powerful scent, but an equally soothing blend that will be sure to liven up any room in your home, in particular a living area, home office, or hallway. In fact, it even has the ability to scent a room without the need to be lit! A major plus, in our eyes. Available in two sizes and in the same signature Diptyque glass casing as their other candles, select from a 20 hour or 60-hour burn time. Unfortunately, this Diptyque scent only comes in the form of a candle—but rest assured, it's a very popular option.

Diptyque Cuir Candle

Size: 190g

Reasons to buy

+
A scent you will remember

Unique

Reasons to avoid

A woody scent you will remember, Cuir is soft, slightly spicy, and a tad floral—with notes of leather and violet to boot. It's a fragrance that tends to be a little forgotten about in the world of Diptyque candles, but it should by no means be dismissed given it is a distinctively musky and unique scent. Cuir is only made in candle form, unfortunately for us, available in a 190g size that can burn for a total of 60 hours. We recommend lighting this late summer to mid-fall when the breeze is picking up and the colder weather is starting to make an appearance. Its slight sense of coziness will be much appreciated.

Diptyque Menthe Verte Candle

15. Diptyque Menthe Verte Candle

Best fresh-smelling Diptyque candle

Specifications

RRP: $68/£49
Burn time: 60hrs
Size: 190g

Reasons to buy

+
A great option for those who dislike heavily spiced scents
+
Great for the colder months

One of the best fresh-smelling Diptyque scents, Menthe Verte is a spearmint candle that's lively enough for any bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, or living area—though we particularly like it in the first two rooms. With notes of wild mint and narguile, it feels fresh and bright—but these notes are also complemented by the warmer, spicy, honeyed scents of tobacco, so you don't feel like you're breathing in toothpaste! It's a fresh yet complex aroma that has been created for the most lively of spaces. It's definitely one for those who dislike heavily spiced candles, but equally, want something warming to burn come fall and winter. Available in one 190g size, with a 60 hour burn time, this glass candle ought to impress guests and create a fresh, light atmosphere.

The most popular Diptyque candle is their Baies (Berries) scent, and it's also their bestseller. It has tangy notes of freshly picked blackcurrant berries, mixed with rose, and is ideal for lighting at home in spring or summer. Don't just take our word for it—it's bestselling for good reason.

There are a couple of other popular, Diptyque bestsellers too. Second place goes to Feu de Bois, a wintertime scent for smoky scent lovers, and Roses—one for lighting in spring or summer, with notes of roses and peonies. Figuier comes in last but definitely not least as a Diptyque bestseller, and this candle is fragranced with figs and opopanax, a sweet and sensual scent.

Why is Diptyque so expensive?

The best Diptyque candles are pricey, there's no doubt about it. But we'd argue that the quality and unique scents of Diptyque candles mean they are worth the money.

Starting from £29 for a mini, 70g candle, Diptyque candles are admittedly expensive. However, this is due to the fact that they can offer something quite a few other candles on the market cannot—firstly, each one is a unique blend of ingredients you would never normally mix together. Take Cuir for instance, which is slightly spicy and a tad floral. They are incredibly unique scents that you generally won't find elsewhere.

Another reason why Diptyque candles boast a mighty price tag is that they are hand poured to the highest standard, using high-quality paraffin wax. The candles are actually produced in impressively small batches, too, and each individual candlewick is straightened by hand to guarantee an even burn every time—to prevent any waste of fragrance.

They also boast an incredibly even burn (no tunneling!), as long as you trim your wick and burn for an appropriate amount of time. Diptyque candles are also now well-known for their decorative packaging, which has become utterly iconic. And while they look uber-classic whilst burning, the jars can also be used for beauty storage once you've finished with the candle
