Unwanted clothes? It's time to Reuse 2 Repurpose!
Donating pre-loved items is good for you, for charity, and for the planet
Whether you are partial to swanky threads or high street fashion, what you do with your unwanted clothes has repercussions for our planet.
The ecological impact of reusing clothing is 70 times lower than producing new clothing so, whenever you donate pre-loved items, you are doing something sustainable and positive.
And this is where Salvation Army Trading Company (SATCoL) – The Salvation Army’s trading arm – comes in…
Tell me more
SATCoL is the largest charity-owned textiles collector in the UK, and their reuse and recycling schemes help to lessen the impact on overflowing landfill sites by extending the useful life of products and minimising waste. Thanks to its free and simple Donate by Post scheme, in partnership with InPost, making donations has never been easier.
If you don’t know much about The Sally Army, as it’s affectionately known, the organisation has been helping those in need since 1865 – that is 160 years of caregiving.
Donate by Post is a winner; for you, for those who will get to enjoy your pre-loved items, and for our beautiful world. By posting your unwanted clothing, handbags, accessories and shoes, you are decluttering your wardrobe, giving fashion a second lease of life, reducing waste, and helping to raise money for charity.
The service is free, convenient and easy to use, and profits raised from the resale of your donated items help fund vital charity work across the country. The Salvation Army provides practical help for people in need, such as specialist support for survivors and potential victims of modern slavery, shelter for those experiencing homelessness, and so much more.
How to donate for free
All you need to do is go to satcol.org and click the ‘Donate by Post’ link. Follow the simple steps to generate a QR code, then package your pieces (no label needed) and head to your nearest InPost station – there are now 12,000 lockers so they are not hard to find.
And bingo! You have just helped to raise vital funds for people who need it most – funds that will make a huge difference. For example, £15 could pay for one week's worth of gas and electric top-up for an older person to stay warm at home, while £25 could cover the costs of running a weekly parent-and-toddler group.
A dynamic campaign
The Salvation Army is so confident in your second-hand apparel that it recently enlisted the support of high-profile influencers to amplify the message of sustainability and social impact for Donate by Post. Jen Graham (aka Charity Shop Girl), fashion stylist and TV presenter Laura Puddy, and Besma Whayeb have already put their names to this important campaign. The digital changemakers hit communities across the UK to spread the word about Donate by Post in short reels featured across their social channels.
In UK households today, textiles are the fastest-growing waste stream, in part due to fast fashion and consumer fads. But with Donate by Post you can buck that trend and help drive lasting change.
