This is the silk face covering that Gigi Hadid is stockpiling to prevent spots

The more luxe silk face covering is rising in popularity. And while it's 100% not a fashion accessory in the same way as a hat or scarf, if you need to wear a face mask every day to protect yourself (and others) from Covid-19, you might as well ensure it looks good and does good.

To that end, Gigi Hadid is encouraging us to up our face covering game. Whether it’s in an oversized plaid coat or shearling bucket hat, Hadid has been spotted around New York with an equally stylish silk mask to match.

The face covering in question is the Discover Night Silk Face Mask, which seems to have Hollywood’s stamp of approval. Adele wore a black version on Saturday Night Live and Priaynka Chopra has reportedly also jumped on the Discover Night silk face covering train.

It’s not hard to see why. Just like a silk pillowcase can help to prevent wrinkles, wearing a silk face mask comes with its own beauty benefits. Silk is known to be antimicrobial so can prevent maskne. (Chrissy Teigen's face mask hack is also worth trying if mask-induced breakouts are an issue).

This is key as Dr Sandra Lee, aka Dr Pimple Popper, explains: "The reason you're getting breakouts is down to occlusion from a mask. You're sweating under there, or if you have a propensity to oily skin, it's easier to have clogged pores and a breakout ensues."

Silk is also softer against the skin, which avoids friction or irritation and keeps rosacea flare-ups at bay.

“The heat from wearing a face mask can cause the skin capillaries to dilate which may aggravate rosacea," says dermatologist Dr Hiba Injibar. "To prevent this from happening, I advise my patients to wear a silk mask as it’s lighter and cooler against the skin.”
