Trigger point season 4 ending explained: What is Lana's fate at the end of the ITV thriller?

Just days after Vicky McClure made history by winning a much-deserved National Television Award (NTA) for her portrayal of Lana Washington in Trigger Point, season 4 of the beloved ITV thriller has come to an end.

The actress filmed her own stunts for the show, that saw Lana on the front line with Counter Terrorism Command as London is hit with a wave of devastating bombings.

The bomb disposal expert races against the clock to hunt down the people behind the attacks, finding out who she can trust and who is hiding dark secrets in the process.

With the fate of the world coming straight to Lana, preventing an apocalypse places the biggest strain on the expo so far - we take a look at what happened in the finale and where we find Lana by the end of the series.

Trigger Point season 4 ending explained

By the end of Trigger Point season 4, Lana and her team have been doing everything in their power to stop a group of mercenaries working for US benefactors, who have been working equally tirelessly to provoke war between the US and Iran.

The mercenaries planned to carry out a horrific attack to create conflict that would push the US and the UK to attack Iran. This culminated by the planting of nuclear explosives at an England vs US football match which would cause maximum destruction when detonated.

By placing the blame with Iran, this would set off the chain of events that could lead to all out war and global devastation. During the finale, the mercenaries are at the football stadium disguised as police officers as Lana and her team race to get there and identify the device.

Lana argues against evacuating the stadium, not wanting to provoke panic and make it harder for her to locate the explosives. Lana tells Danny (Eric Shango) to leave and get away from the source of such massive danger as he's just about to become a father.

When she finds it, Lana will only have a short time to work on the device before being exposed to dangerous levels of radiation - it's implied that she will risk her life to dispose of the bomb if it comes to it, even if that means facing the consequences of exposure.

At the stadium, Lana overhears the police impersonators say there's 30 minutes left until detonation, giving her a clearer picture of what she's facing - she lets her team know nobody can be trusted.

With time running out, help comes in the form of Helen Morgan, whose brother had been earlier been abducted to manipulate her into betraying her team. This ultimately led to the deaths of Commander Quentin and DCI Batra.

Helen rescues her brother just before he's about to be shot dead, and he's able to tell her where to find the bomb. Helen hands this information to Lana who realises she's on the wrong side of the stadium to get to the bomb quickly.

No sooner does Lana find the location of the device after a tense and hindered search, she's told the Prime Minister has given the green light to send British jets to attack the stadium.

Everyone in the stadium is being sacrificed for the greater good - the aerial attack would prevent the bomb detonating and minimise deaths from any explosion.

By this time, and to have the jets called off, Lana has just minutes left to disconnect the radioactive part of the device that would set it off, without damaging the rest of the bomb.

She eventually uses a gun to separate the radioactive side and prevent detonation. Seconds before the jets are due to arrive at the stadium, they're called off when Lana has disposed of the threat.

Just before she achieves success in shutting down the device, Lana comes under attack from a sniper and just after her moment of triumph is left bleeding out and losing consciousness on the floor.

Although it looks like the expo might've reached the end of the road, viewers later find out she survived. As Danny arrives to introduce his newborn daughter to the team, Lana is seen having tracked down Helen to a lake house in France.

As Helen stands outside on a wooden pier overlooking a serene scene, she looks down to see a bomb planted below the wooden planks underneath her - hearing a noise behind her, she turns to see Lana looking like she might press a button at any moment and blow her up.

Telling Helen "I'm not an expo anymore," she demands an explanation for her betrayal. Helen says she couldn't see an alternative, saying Lana would "never understand the life" she and Luke have had.

Lana responds with informing her that in their job, "We protect millions, not just the one," before letting her know the bomb beneath her feet wasn't real and having her arrested - Luke had already been taken away by police earlier.

Later handing over Helen's recorded confession and her ID badge, Lana reveals, "That is me done." That's where audiences leave her, driving off into the sunset with her dog, into an uncertain future she's yet to decide on, her job having taken such an incredible emotional toll.
