Queen Letizia of Spain's flared jeans and biscuit-toned polo knit remind us that relaxed winter outfits can be elegant as well as cosy
If you need a go-to outfit that feels comfortable but looks put-together then you can't go too far wrong with jeans and a jumper
Queen Letizia of Spain's signature style blends sophistication and comfort so beautifully and yet her outfits can sometimes be overlooked compared to those of the Princess of Wales or Queen Mary of Denmark. I often find myself looking to her for inspiration and on a recent visit she stepped out in what was actually quite a casual outfit and looked incredibly chic.
Letizia went to Llanes in Asturias wearing a pair of £39.99 flared jeans with a biscuit-toned polo jumper and a white shirt. In the same way Princess Catherine champions British clothing brands, the Queen of Spain loves supporting Spanish brands and Mango is one of her go-tos for affordable staples like these jeans.

Sadly the Queen's exact Hugo Boss jumper is sold out but this one from Nobody's Child has a similar polo-inspired design. It comes in three colours including this oatmeal marl and has a collar, long sleeves and a relaxed fit. The mock horn buttons on the front add an extra touch of detail.
The Queen of Spain loves supporting Spanish brands and these jeans from Mango are very affordable and still in stock. You can also get them in black and they have a flattering high-rise waist and a wide flared shape. Pair with a soft polo jumper and you've got yourself a very regal look.
These lace-up ankle boots have a comfortable chunky sole and handy pull tab at the back to make pulling them on and off so easy. They are made from leather and come in various shades, though the tan-brown tone is most similar to the colour of Queen Letizia's footwear.
You can't go wrong with a wool jumper in winter and this one from Reiss is crafted from soft and breathable merino wool. It's got a relaxed silhouette that works perfectly if you want to loosely tuck it into trousers or jeans and there's a half-button polo collar. The hems and cuffs are ribbed too.
I bought these exact jeans earlier in the autumn and I love them as a change from my go-to wide-leg pairs. They're slim fitting on the leg and have a subtle flare at the bottom, so they're great to style with a chunky jumper. There's added stretch in the fabric and sculpting technology for a flattering fit.
These pull-on Chelsea boots have leather uppers and a rounded toe, as well as the classic elasticated panels on the sides. The cleated sole adds extra grip which is always a bonus in the wet weather of autumn/winter. The low heel is comfy for everyday wear and they come in black as well as this dark brown.
They also come in black and have a high-rise design that's particularly flattering if you want to accentuate your waist. Hers were deep blue and this colour naturally has less variation in the wash than lighter denim, giving it a smarter edge.
Everyone's autumn/winter wardrobe needs a great pair of comfortable jeans that you can dress up and down for different occasions and flares are a little different. Letizia's flares had quite a relaxed leg shape, though you can get some like this style from M&S I bought early this autumn which are more streamlined and fitted at the top and this works so well with chunkier wool and cashmere jumpers.
The Queen of Spain loosely tucked her Hugo Boss polo jumper into her jeans for a smart-casual effect and it was a soft brown tone. Chocolate brown is a must-have colour for autumn but lighter shades are equally versatile and the sweater was a lovely contrast against Letizia's dark blue denim.
In pictures taken during her visit to Llanes - newly-crowned 2026 Best Asturian Village - you can see that she layered her knitwear over a plain white fitted shirt. The two collars stacked up together nicely, though if I was recreating a similar look I'd probably go for a thermal vest or T-shirt underneath instead.
This way, the half-button polo would be more visible and this design detail also adds a more casual edge to knitwear. Queen Letizia wore a navy blue belted trench by Hugo Boss over the top at another point in the day and she went for practical cleated shoes.

These were by outdoor brand Verhunt and they had a rounded toe and sturdy block heel. Chestnut leather ankle boots would be a gorgeous alternative and also practical for the unpredictable weather conditions this time of year.
The beauty of denim is that it goes with everything and with a neutral knit you also get a lot of versatility, so the styling possibilities are endless. Queen Letizia could easily have gone for heeled boots and a blazer or longline coat over the top to take this from an understated daytime look to a low-key evening outfit.
You can also make this wintry combination even cosier by opting for a thicker jumper, but if you stick with timeless shapes and neutral colours like the Queen of Spain did, your ensemble will always look sophisticated.
