It’s finally autumn, which means it’s knitwear season. A slight chill, light bit of rain, but still some sunny patches here and there, knitted cardigans provide an ideal layer that answer nearly all outfit dilemmas at this time of year – and Lorraine Kelly just wore a striped style that’s set to become an autumn favourite.

Spotted wearing Mint Velvet’s burgundy striped knit cardigan while presenting Lorraine last week, the thick, eye-catching stripe pattern and a neat, classic collar added an elevated touch. Soft ecru and rich burgundy carried through to the buttons, solidifying the autumnal feel, while a touch of wool in the material lent a cosy, cool-weather finish.

When it came to styling her cardigan, Lorraine opted for a directional burgundy leather midi skirt. As well as complementing the colour, it also contrasted the texture of the cardi, offering a beautiful finish that felt sophisticated, elevated and perfectly placed to transition from day to night this season.

Cardigans are a forever staple in autumn capsule wardrobes for a reason, as they offer an effortless yet classic look no matter how you style them. And, of course, they win points for practicality and versatility, too. Always on hand to offer an extra layer of warmth, they’re just as easily thrown on over casual autumn outfit ideas as they are with office-ready smart casual outfits – and they can even be updated to work alongside more evening-appropriate attire, too.

With a bold, striped knit like Lorraine’s, there’s plenty of styling options. You can keep it simple with your most comfortable jeans and some cosy boots for everyday, or for occasions, a leather skirt or tailored trousers can offer a sleek contrast with textured knits.

For a cohesive feel, pick out the tones in whichever knit you choose to wear and highlight them with your choice of skirt, jeans or trousers; just as Lorraine pulled out the burgundy stripes of her cardi with her choice of skirt. Finishing off a look like this with some pumps or loafers makes light work of elevated autumn styling.
