Ease into autumn with short-sleeved knitwear; this is the £18 layering piece I'm wearing on repeat

The weather is all over the place right now but this woolly wonder will see you through in style

Pulling together autumn outfits that will be cosy for the chilly October mornings, as well as wearable for the post-lunch high temperatures, has been tricky over the last few weeks, but I’ve found that a knitted T-shirt, or short-sleeved jumper, really is the answer – and my new favourite is just £18 at Tesco.

Short-sleeved, woolly wonders are ideal for this transitional period, as they strike the balance between snuggle season and the balmier autumn climes, all while looking very polished and feeling easy to wear.

I found a gorgeous navy iteration from F&F at Tesco recently, and it's fast become my go-to for both work and the weekend. The fitted silhouette and classic colour, combined with the puffed sleeves and a roll neck, look great, and it has plenty of stretch to keep it comfy, but it's a little smarter than my everyday T-shirts, and buddies up neatly with everything from a pleated skirt to my wide-leg jeans.

The knit feels warm and autumn-ready but having my arms out means I can wear it all day without feeling too sweaty during a sunny afternoon or a busy commute - it’s such a winner for right now and it will be a very useful separate right into winter too.

When it comes to your short-sleeved jumpers, block colours are probably easiest to style. Whether you go for a brighter shade or a soft neutral, you'll easily be able to team them with everything from leopard print jeans to a busy patterned skirt. The shorter sleeves mean that the knits are easy to layer up too - I've worn mine under an oversized shirt, as well as with my reversible coat minus any sweaty feel.

Cashmere and real wool pieces can often be more expensive, but they do tend to be the warmest and longer-lasting, so they will make a wise addition to any autumn capsule wardrobe. Don't worry if you are on a budget, though, as the high street is filled with affordable and snuggly knitted buys to take you into the new season in the chicest way, and if you follow our guide on how to store jumpers, they really can last you for years to come.

A knitted T-shirt will look polished with minimal effort, and I guarantee that you'll be wearing yours on repeat, right through to spring.
