Everyone's talking about Calvin Klein's 90s straight jeans – these high-street alternatives offer the look for less
From M&S to River Island, I think I've found the perfect 90s straight-leg jeans
Finding the perfect pair of jeans can feel like a hard task. However, there are a few brands that stand out for excellent quality, flattering cuts, and stylish washes. Calvin Klein is one of them. A surge of interest in its iconic 90s straight jeans has seen a renewed appeal that can be traced back to the influence of 90s style icons such as Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, whose minimalist wardrobe has been heavily trending this year.
Although I can't deny the appeal of flared or bootcut jeans as well as curved barrel-leg styles, a pair of the best straight-leg jeans is a wardrobe must-have. Calvin's 90s straight-leg jeans are praised for their flattering mid-rise silhouette and relaxed fit that still manages to elongate your legs. After trying on the trending pair, I completely understand the hype surrounding this denim cut.
However, costing just under a hundred pounds, I set out to find affordable alternatives on the high street. I found three standout styles that deliver the same rigid cotton finish and flattering straight leg that doesn't cling to your figure.
Shop Calvin Klein 90s Straight Jeans
From dark indigo to light blue, there are four colourways to choose from. They feature a flattering mid-rise cut and a straight leg that leaves enough room around the thighs and calves to still feel relaxed. They tend to come true to size; however, there are limited sizes available, from waist 24-34 inches. Here I am wearing a 30-inch waist pair (true to size) in indigo.
Shop Alternative, affordable 90s straight-leg Jeans
M&S have some of the most comfortable jeans, and these straight-leg jeans are made from a cotton-rich denim with added stretch. In terms of cut and fit, they are extremely similar to Calvin Klein's 90s jeans with the neat mid-rise and flattering straight leg. They feature handy pockets and come in a good range of sizes from UK 6-24, with the option to choose from a selection of leg lengths too.
Although in terms of price, these jeans aren't too dissimilar to Calvin's 90s jeans, they were some of the most flattering I tried on. Not only are they available in regular sizes, but this cut also comes in a "curve love" version. They are also available in a range of colours from ecru to dark brown. Here I'm wearing the medium blue version in a size 30".
River Island has an impressive denim range, and this pair are a best-selling style. They feature a relaxed design that sits neatly on the hips and falls into a flattering straight-leg silhouette. I have rolled up the hems for a laid-back finish; however, for an evening out, they can be worn full length with boots or slingback heels.
90s straight-leg jeans are enjoying a resurgence right now. Sitting neatly on the waist before falling into a straight, streamlined leg, the cut skims your legs without clinging. The beauty of a denim silhouette like this is how versatile it can be.
Unlike your best skinny jeans, it's not overly fitted, yet it has a smarter, more polished feel than wide-leg silhouettes, making it an easy option to wear every day. From styling them with trainers and knitwear to creating smart-casual outfits such as jeans and a blazer, you can't go wrong by investing in this cut. And, as I've proved, whether you have a designer budget or need a more cost-effective buy, there are plenty of options.
