We’re eager to see what the stars will be wearing to the 2021 Oscars. (We wait all year for those red carpet moments, after all!) One thing we won’t see, surprisingly? Face masks. (Yes, you’ve read that correctly.)
In the age of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and social distancing, it seems that masks are as essential as shoes. However, Variety made the exclusive reveal that Academy Awards attendees will not be required to wear face coverings while the ceremony is under way. Needless to say, everyone’s a little puzzled.
So, why exactly are celebs and their entourages allowed to enjoy the indoor festivities mask-free when the mere thought sounds so foreign at a time like this? Apparently, since the Oscars are being treated as a TV/film production, masks are not required. However, guests – there will be a cap of 170 – are going to be required to mask up when the camera isn’t rolling, like during commercial breaks.
More from woman&home:
Staying safe while staying home? You’re not alone. There are ways to enjoy a socially distanced Oscars party with the comfort of your pod, and we’ll help make the night a smash-hit. If you’re watching with friends or solo, we suggest a sip of bubbly – it’s practically mandatory.
But it’s not all fun and games: there's work to be done ahead of the big night. Before things get under way, you’re definitely going to want to familiarize yourself with the line-up. We’ve rounded up the films nominated for an Academy Award this year, and we’ll tell you where to stream ’em! From Promising Young Woman and Minari to Judas and the Black Messiah and Onward, this list makes the ultimate to-watch list.
