How we tested the British Natural Collection 5750 Mattress
This mattress was put to the test by Rose Llewellyn, a member of our tester network. Here's a little more about her.
Rose is part of our tester network. Whilst temperature regulation is her main focus in a mattress, she shared that she wanted hers to be soft to help cushion her aching joints at the end of the day. We paired her with this mattress because it promises to deliver on both accounts with the added bonus of natural fibres.
What's the British Natural Collection 5750 Mattress made from?
The British Natural Collection Wool 5750 is a thoughtfully layered mattress, made in Yorkshire by heritage bedmakers Harrison Spinks, and its internal make-up is where much of the magic happens.
At its core are layers of natural fillings, including traceable British wool and homegrown hemp fibres. From a technical standpoint, British wool is prized for its thermoregulatory and hygroscopic properties. In simpler terms, it naturally helps regulate body temperature and manage moisture, drawing excess heat and humidity away from your body while you sleep. That means you’re less likely to wake up clammy or overheated, particularly useful if you tend to sleep warm or experience night sweats. The hemp fibres add structure and breathability, helping the mattress feel supportive without tipping into firmness.
Underneath the natural comfort layers sits Harrison Spinks’ Cortec™ Quad pocket spring system. This is a spring-in-spring construction, meaning each pocket contains two nested springs that respond in stages. Heavier areas like your hips and shoulders trigger deeper support, while lighter areas are gently cushioned. The result is targeted lumbar support, effective pressure relief, and better spinal alignment, which can help reduce aches and pains over time. Because each spring moves independently, the mattress also allows for improved airflow, contributing to a cooler, fresher sleep environment.

Notably, the Cortec™ Quad system is glue-free, with springs sealed using heat rather than adhesives. While that’s a technical manufacturing detail, what it means for you is twofold: the springs can move more freely for better performance, and the mattress is 100% recyclable at the end of its life. It’s a rare example of sustainability and sleep engineering working hand in hand.
In terms of feel, this mattress is naturally on the softer side, but it can be ordered in a regular or firmer tension if you prefer a little more resistance. That flexibility makes it well suited to a wide range of sleepers, especially those who want a plush, cushioned surface without sacrificing proper support underneath.
Who would the British Natural Collection 5750 Mattress suit?
You'll have established that there are some operative words that come up time and time again when talking about this mattress: natural, luxurious, cushioning and cooling. That naturally selects a few, very specific sleepers to whom the British Natural Collection Wool 5750 Mattress is best suited.
Firstly, let's talk about the firmness and motion transfer. Rose described this as "instantly cloud-like, it felt like I had dived onto a pile of duvets," which makes the soft, gently cushioned mattress perfect for anyone who likes that sink-in softness when they're lying on a mattress. That being said, it's balanced into a supportive mattress with the spring system, making it specifically helpful for side-sleepers who need a mattress that will let their shoulders and hips sink a little, whilst keeping their spine aligned. Rose, our tester, is a combination sleeper and found "the mattress was really great at adapating to whichever position I chose to sleep in. I could chop and change in the right and feel the mattress growing and sinking in all the perfect places."
Of course, the other qualifier for this mattress is that it's cooling (and natural in how it helps temperature regulation). British wool isn't typically what you think of when you want to cool down, but all the hot sleepers on the woman&home team swear by it for helping regulate temperature. Team that with the breathable construction and you get a mattress that helps to create a cooler, drier sleep environment. We'll get into the details later on, but Rose found the mattress "kept me at a steady temperature though the night. I didn't wake up clammy or overly hot at all."
It's also worth noting that this comes with a firmer tension if you're a back sleeper. You'll still get the plush surface feel, but with more lumbar support.
Delivery and unboxing the British Natural Collection 5750 Mattress
Mattresses aren't the kind of delivery that can slip through your post box, so we allocate a section of our reviews for what the lead-up to receiving your mattress is like. Harrison Spinks sells this through John Lewis, which means that you get a reliably impressive door-to-door service.
Rose noted "I was well aware of when the mattress was due to arrive and the kind delivery men carried it into my room for me." On the website, you can chose a mattress removal service, which Rose didn't need to use, but it makes life easy being able to hand your old mattress over when your new one arrives.
After taking of a small amount of protective plastic, they recommend that you leave your mattress in a well-ventilated room for a few hours. Rose didn't notice any natural scent coming from the fillings, but when you are using materials, especially wool, this can be the case. It usually dissipates after a few days. John Lewis recommends using a cotton mattress protector to keep yours fresh.
You'll also have a 60-nigh comfort trial as well as free standard delivery included. These aren't extras that every brand throws in, so don't be afraid to account for them when you're making comparisons.
What's the British Natural Collection 5750 Mattress like to sleep on?
Sleeping on the British Natural Collection Wool 5750 feels immediately soft and welcoming, but with a reassuring level of support underneath. Rose told us that, "when I was putting it on my bedframe, I could feel the plush top of the mattress and I couldn't wait to hop on and give it a test."
After just one night of sleeping on the mattress, Rose's excitement was verified. "The surface felt gently cushioning," she added, "rather than sinking in and getting lost, it felt plush and luxurious, holding my body in a position that felt really comfortable and nicely aligned." This will be the work of the spring-in-spring structure, which will support the heavier parts of your body, so that whilst your hips and shoulders settle, there isn't any sagging or instability. It's the perfect balance between comfort and structure, especially if you're a side sleeper.
When it came to the all-important question of temperature regulation, the British Natural Collection 5750 Mattress shone. Rose told us "the mattress did a really good job at keeping me at a comfortable temperature through the night, never tipping too warm or too cool." The combination of breathable pocket springs and naturally thermoregulating British wool helps to move excess heat and moisture away from the body. Rose commented on this, saying "I almost always used to wake up feeling clammy, even in the winter. However, as soon as I started sleeping on this, my skin felt fresher in the morning."
If you share your bed, as Rose does, you'll also want a good idea of what the motion transfer and edge support is like. In the case of the British Natural Collection 5750 Mattress, the individually pocketed springs work hard to make a big difference. Rose found that movement from both her and her partner was well-absorbed, meaning shuffles in position in the night didn't ripple across the whole mattress.
Rose said "the fact that I could lie right on the edge of the bed and feel the same support as in the middle added to just how luxurious and comforting this mattress feels." She felt the quietly competent, confident mattress was perfect for her needs.
Is the British Natural Collection 5750 Mattress good value?
When a mattress has credentials like the British Natural Collection 5750 Mattress, it is always going to come with a relatively high price tag. I'd put it in the mid-to-premium tier when you factor in that the super king retails around £2,000. That's justified by the hand-crafting, natural filling, and advanced pocket springs. You're paying for well-made, traceable materials that are all recyclable and glue-free. In this market, the price is about spot-on. There are plenty of mattress that promise the same for more money and very few that can claim the same for less money.
We asked Rose to weigh up the price and quality of her sleep to answer the question "would you recommend this to a friend?" and her answer was an almost instant yes. Whilst this isn't a budget model, it feels luxurious, performs well, and regulates temperature impressively. It's good value for a premium product - and the 7-year guarantee only sweetens the deal (you shouldn't keep yours for more than ten years).
Should you buy the British Natural Collection 5750 Mattress?
The British Natural Collection 5750 Mattress has genuinely impressed us. It sits confidently in the premium, natural mattress category, particularly for shoppers prioritising breathability and cooling, yet it avoids the eye-watering price tags often associated with this end of the market. When compared with established names like Naturalmat, Button & Sprung, or even Simba’s Earth Collection, it stands out as exceptional value for money, offering heritage craftsmanship, traceable natural materials and advanced support at a far more approachable price point. For side sleepers in particular, it delivers that elusive combination of softness, pressure relief and proper spinal support, all without relying on chemical foams or synthetic fillers.
After nearly six months of real-world testing, Rose’s verdict neatly sums it up: “I’ve spent too long skimping and trying to save in lots of areas of my life. This is the kind of investment that I just won’t ever regret. You can’t put a price on sleep as you get older, and just a week of sleeping on it is all the proof I need.” If you’re looking for natural, chemical-free sleep comfort that feels indulgent but thoughtfully designed, this could well be the mattress that finally convinces you that better sleep is worth investing in.
How we test mattresses
At woman&home, we have a series of standardised tests that we put every mattress through to give balanced, accurate reviews of every mattress that we recommend. Before any review goes up, our experts have slept on them for at least one month. Rose has slept on the British Natural Collection 5750 Mattress, since August, so we have a good test of how this mattress supports her spinal, joint, and sleep health over time.
We look at whether it’s genuinely cooling and supportive, tracking changes in sleep quality, comfort and consistency over time rather than relying on first impressions alone. Our testers assess pressure relief in different sleep positions, how well the mattress supports the spine through the night, and whether any aches or stiffness develop after prolonged use. We also consider motion transfer, edge support, and how the mattress feels across different seasons, as temperature regulation can change over time.
Alongside hands-on testing, we evaluate build quality, materials, sustainability credentials and value for money, comparing each mattress against others in the same price bracket. This combination of long-term sleep testing and expert analysis allows us to give clear, trustworthy recommendations, so you can be confident that any mattress we rate highly has earned its place.
