She’s an actress, director, humanitarian, mother to six and wife to one of Hollywood’s most esteemed actors. As Angelina Jolie turns 40 today, we take a look back at some of her most inspiring moments.
1. Her bravery as she shared her experience after having preventative surgery
that Angelina Jolie-Pitt had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed
during preventative surgery were soon confirmed when an article, written
by the Hollywood actress after the surgery, was published by the New York Times.
Jolie wrote about the day she receieved her results, difficult
decisions she faced along the way and the procedures. Her account is
touching and encouraging as she urges women to be proactive when it
comes to health issues. ‘Knowledge is power,’ she writes.
2. A loving mother to six children
Angelina is mother to six children. Jolie adopted her first child, Maddox, from Cambodia in 2002, Zahara from Ethiopia in 2005 and Pax from Vietnam in 2007. Shiloh, Vivienne and Knox are her and Brad’s biological children.
During her successful acting and directing career Jolie has received an Academy Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards.
4. Jean Hersholt Award
In 2013 Jolie became the youngest winner of this Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sponsored award for her humanitarian work.
5. Her work as a U.N. goodwill ambassador
After seeing first hand the crisis in Cambodia during filming for Tomb Raider, Jolie began supporting relief action and began visiting the refugee camps. In 2001, she became a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations.
