What to expect from tonight's Oscars and who is nominated for an Academy Award

It's been delayed by a couple of months because of Covid-19 but the Oscars will take place tonight.

But, will the event be the same as previous years, and who is set to win the top Academy Awards? 

Expect lavish designer dresses and amazing hair and makeup transformations - in real life, because despite Covid, organisers have asked the nominees, including Cary Mulligan and Frances McDormand, to refrain from using Zoom to collect their Academy awards.

While the night will also welcome nominees including Gary Oldman for David Fincher’s film Mank, which has had 10 nominations and Daniel Kaluuya, who is nominated for best supporting actor in the film Judas and the Black Messiah.

What to expect on the night

While many of us have got used to seeing stars collect their awards while sitting in their own homes, via Zoom, the star-studded ceremony will actually take place in person.

Los Angeles will be the main hub for the night - with stars gathering at either the Dolby Theatre or Union Station.

However, two European locations have also been set up for international stars and filmmakers - including the BFI in London and a studio in Paris.

The ceremony will kick off at 5pm PT in LA, which will mean 1am in the UK. While it will be aired on Sky Cinema's Oscars channel. 

And the winner is....

The film Mank, starring Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried, leads the nominations, with 10, including for best actor and best set design. Other films including the Trial of the Chicago 7 and Minari have 6 nominations.

Nomadland, which stars Frances McDormand, and was directed by Chloé Zhao, is expected to win best picture and best director, while Carey Mulligan is in the running for best actress after her performance in recently released Promising young Woman. 

She joins other actresses including Vanessa Kirby and Viola Davis - who are also in the running to win the award.

Chadwick Boseman, who won a posthumous Golden Globe earlier this year, is also a favourite for best actor, for the film Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.
