A Sex and the City insider has finally hinted at how Samantha Jones’ absence will be explained in its upcoming reboot - and it’s not as dramatic as viewers might expect.
The news that Kim Cattrall would not be returning to our screens as the PR queen in the hit show’s HBO revival, ‘And Just Like That', came as little surprise to Sex and the City fans.
Tensions between Kim Cattrall and Sarah-Jessica Parker have long been public knowledge, with their feud reportedly dating back to the series's early days. But with Samantha often credited as the backbone of the iconic foursome, fans are now wondering how writers will justify the loss of its boldest character.
Luckily, HBO Max chief content officer Casey Blows has the answer to this burning question.
“Friendships fade, and new friendships start. So I think it is all very indicative of the real stages, the actual stages of life,” he told TVLine on Wednesday. “They’re trying to tell an honest story about being a woman in her 50s in New York. So it should all feel somewhat organic, and the friends that you have when you’re 30, you may not have when you’re 50.”
Rather than slicing Kim Cattrall’s character from the script with a freak accident or a conveniently timed sabbatical, it looks like the fourth lady of the group will simply be unfriended.
Blows’ revelation may be brutal, but it has also reassured fans of one major thing - Samantha will not be replaced.
“They’re not trying to redo Sex and the City,” he said. “They’re not trying to say that these characters are reliving their 30s. It is very much a story about women in their 50s, and they are dealing with things that people deal with in their 50s.”
Writing for the highly anticipated new series has already commenced, with filming scheduled to begin in Spring 2021. Sarah Jessica Parker has also confirmed that the plotline will feature Covid-19, with so many locations off-limits due to New York City’s lockdown. Fans can look forward to 10 half-hour episodes, which will stream on HBO Max.
