There’s few things more satisfying that setting your ‘out of office’ and heading on holiday, but for many of us we find ourselves getting a cold when we’re there. Typical!
You might just think its life playing a cruel joke on you, but there’s actually a good reason why this happens. It’s not fun, but there’s medical evidence to back it up.
Dr Luke Powles, Associate Clinical Director for Bupa Health Clinics, told Red Magazine: “As a doctor I regularly hear from patients who’ve found themselves unwell while on holiday. While the causes can vary, it’s often brought on by exposure to unfamiliar environments or from being near other travellers who are also sick.
"In the run up to a holiday, it’s also easy to find yourself getting busy or stressed – which can wear down your immune system, making you more vulnerable to sickness while you’re away.”
This probably sounds very relatable, as we’re all trying to pack so much in before we jet off on holiday. Whether that’s work responsibilities, life admin, or seeing friends and family, it can all build up.
Whilst it's impossible to fully protect yourself, there are little things you can do to help prevent getting a cold both on holiday and off. It’s all about doing your best to build up your immune system in your daily life.
So what does Dr Powles advise? He said: “Wherever you can, it’s worth building up your immune system in the weeks before your holiday. Simple steps can make a big difference – for example, make sure you’re getting plenty of sleep and are washing your hands regularly to avoid picking up any bugs.”
Naturally, your diet is very important too, and you should be getting plenty of vitamins and antioxidants into your body.
“Likewise try and maintain a healthy diet and include foods rich in antioxidants, like leafy green vegetables, berries and citrus fruits.
"Vitamin D is also a great boost for your immune system so, if you’re not getting enough sunlight, it might be worth considering adding a supplement to your diet.” Dr Powles added.
So there you have it, there is a way to prevent this from happening. Time to stock up on the anti-bac and plenty of fruit and veg before your next holiday!
