  • As two of the most famous women in the world, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, regularly have their outfit choices scrutinised by the entire world.

And even in pregnancy, the Duchess of Cambridge has faced intense attention on what she opts to wear. So it’s likely that Meghan will face the very same thing, as her pregnancy progresses.

But according to one of Catherine’s favourite maternity fashion brands, she has an interesting tactic for her pregnancy style – and it’s one that the founder of the brand reckons Meghan will also adopt.

Cecile Reinaud, founder of Seraphine – whom Catherine has worn countless times throughout her three pregnancies – told Instyle that the Duchess would always wear shorter hemlines while expecting.

She also revealed that she expects Meghan to take inspiration from her sister-in-law, and may do the same thing over the next few months. And there’s a very interesting reason why the Duchess’ choose to do so…

Cecile said, “She’s [Meghan] likely to have quite a big bump because she’s quite a petite build…so highlighting legs and arms is always a good trick to keep a nice silhouette.”

“Because her pregnancy is going to be a winter pregnancy, I think she’s more likely to shorten her hemline and also probably wear what we’ve seen at [Eugenie’s] royal wedding, this kind of coat dress,”

Cecile continued, explaining that it’s a trick that Catherine – who is also quite petite – also used when pregnant.

She said, [Kate] did [go shorter] for sure. She went shorter, on a couple of occasions well above her knee, which she never does normally,”

“And especially in winter, because when she wore opaque black tights, it looks okay. It doesn’t look too much because it’s not bare legs, it’s black opaque tights with a shorter dress.”

In fact, we’ve already seen Meghan Markle debut a few, shorter hemlines during hers and Harry’s royal tour of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga – suggesting the Duchess may well be taking a leaf out of Catherine’s style book already.

Seraphine founder Cecile also shared her predictions that Meghan will stay true to her signature, understated and tailored style while pregnant, rather than opt for the more pastel, floral designs, that her new sister-in-law seems to favour.

She suggested, “I think generally, people sort of try to stay true to their pre-maternity style during maternity,”

“So I think we will see the trends she’s shown us, which is a lot of monochrome, not a lot of print, structured shapes, close to the body, slightly androgynous sometimes with trousers and suits. I don’t think she’s going to suddenly transform herself and wear lots of pastels, which is more Kate’s style.”

Since Meghan came on the royal scene, we’ve also seen her wear plenty of trouser suits, something younger royal women in the past have tended to stay away from. But according to Cecile Reinaud, trousers could be a super-flattering option for Meghan’s maternity wardrobe, given her slim figure.

She explained, “She’s got very thin legs, you know, as we’ve seen with her flashing them on the royal tour, so I think trousers really work well.”

We can’t wait to see how Meghan’s style changes as she nears her due date!
