Practical Magic is back - recreate the Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock outfits we’re still obsessed with 28 years later
Here's how to channel Sally and Gillian Owens in 2026
It's been almost thirty years since Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock first cast a spell on us in Practical Magic, but our love of the Owens sisters' wardrobe (and midnight margaritas) is still going strong.
Now that a sequel to the cult classic is out in cinemas, there's no better excuse to revisit the 90s outfits that have become just as iconic as the film itself. From Sally's Levi's 501 jeans to Gillian's velvet mini dress and chunky cardigans, their wardrobes are the ultimate moodboard for autumn outfit ideas.
Not only is the Practical Magic style perfect for the season ahead, but it also feels very relevant to today's autumn/winter 2026 trends - think boho meets gothic romance. I've broken it down into four key pieces to help you get this nostalgic look - no witchcraft needed.
Levi's jeans
Sally's wardrobe is a bit more practical and homely than her sister's, and the perfect pair of jeans is at the heart of it. They are, of course, Levi's 501s, which are available in plenty of different washes and will work with everything from check shirts to chunky knitwear this season. For warmer days, try a crochet top like Sally's to add some texture. Alexa, play 'This Kiss' by Faith Hill.
The little red tab on the back pocket of Levi's denim is instantly recognisable, plus there's a reason the 501 is the most famous pair of jeans ever made. The straight-leg shape is incredibly flattering and works with any shoe, from Birkenstock Boston clogs to your favourite trainers.
Velvet dress
Gillian's style is all about gothic glamour, and this green velvet dress particularly sticks in my mind from the original film. Doesn't the colour look beautiful with her red hair? Fast forward to today, and velvet and devore dresses are still very much on trend. Play with textures by adding a cosy knit over the top, or adding some braided ballet flats.
Printed midi skirts
Sandra Bullock's printed skirt particularly stood out to me on my most recent rewatch of the film. It's aged beautifully, and I honestly think a statement long skirt is just about the most versatile piece you can add to your autumn capsule wardrobe. Wear yours with a cosy cardigan à la the Owens sisters, adding chunky lace up boots to toughen things up a bit.
This bargain buy from the ME+EM sale has a really similar print to Sally's style, and the colour is even described on the website as 'cinnamon'. Does it get any more autumnal?
For a narrower silhouette I can see Nicole Kidman wearing, Jigsaw has got you covered. This is made from a stretchy jersey fabric, and there's even a matching top available, too.
Cosy knitwear
I'm excited to see if the knitwear in the new film is as amazing as it was in the original. Anyone remember the floral cardigan Gillian wears? This oversized grey option was another memorable knit - size up or even try the menswear section to get the silhouette you want.
