After two years of wearing my Birkenstock Boston clogs, they're still the shoes I can't live without

I'm not sure why, but I resisted the Birkenstock Boston clog for a while. And even once I decided to give them a go, I have to admit it wasn't necessarily love-at-first-wear.

Look down, and you'll spot the instantly recognisable clog everywhere from morning commutes to airport lounges. The slip-on design and laidback silhouette have made the Boston clog a firm favourite with fashion insiders and celebrities such as Kylie Minogue and Jennifer Aniston - but are they comfortable? And are they worth the £150 price tag when there are so many Birkenstock lookalikes out there?

I've spent the last two years testing out a pair for myself, to see whether these iconic clogs really deserve a place in your everyday wardrobe. From the comfort and fit to how easy they are to style, here’s everything you need to know before investing.

Birkenstock Boston clogs: comfort & support

The Bostons have a structured feel underfoot, so don’t expect them to feel like a springy pair of trainers straight out of the box. Depending on your feet, you may need a little time to get used to Birkenstock's signature footbed and allow the shoe to mould to you.

Sizing is worth considering carefully, particularly if you’re between sizes. I’d recommend checking Birkenstock’s guide before buying just in case, but my usual size fitted me perfectly.

Mine took a few wears to fully get into the swing of them, and I needed to adjust the tightness of the strap, as at first I felt like I was working hard to stop them from slipping off.

But after that initial wear-in time, they soon became an everyday staple in my wardrobe. I've worn them on planes, for full days of sightseeing, busy days at the office and even trips to the beach, and I've found them to be supremely comfortable and easy. Being able to slip them on and off is just so convenient, plus as soon as you get to grips with pairing yours with socks, it means you can wear them almost all year round.

Birkenstock Boston clogs: style

The thing that surprised me most about the Birkenstock Boston clogs was just how versatile they are. When they first arrived, they felt quite heavy and wide on my feet, so I wasn't sure I'd wear them with anything but jeans.

You soon get used to them, and as well as jeans in any cut, they look effortlessly stylish with wide-leg trousers for a more fashion-forward take, or with socks and a midi skirt when you want to lean into cosy, Scandi style.

At this time of year, I particularly like pairing mine with white jeans outfits, as the neutral colour complements them perfectly and it's a really expensive-looking combination.

Birkenstock Boston clogs: cleaning & care

Since I bought the taupe suede version, I admit I was worried about how quickly they might get dirty. I'd still certainly avoid wearing them on the rainiest of days, but I've worn mine on the beach and in a bit of rain, and somehow there's not a mark on them two years in.

Birkenstock's advice is to "Apply Birkenstock Water & Stain Repellent regularly to protect upper Leather, Suede and Nubuck from water and dirt. Brush uppers with a Nubuck/Suede brush to pull up dirt and dust and restore the nap."

Birkenstock Boston clogs: verdict

When I consider the shoes I've worn most in the last couple of years, the Boston clog has absolutely overtaken my beloved white trainers and comfortable sandals to claim the top spot.

The contoured footbed takes a bit of getting used to, but soon provides plenty of comfort and support for everyday wear. The slip-on design means no fiddly laces or buckles. They're super easy to throw on, and are great for travelling in.

They work with jeans, trousers, dresses and skirts, making them so versatile, and much more useful than they might initially appear. What's more, the classic clog design has been around for decades, so they're unlikely to fall out of fashion any time soon.

They've been useful all summer long, but when teamed with socks and knitwear, I think these are the ultimate autumn shoe. The closed toe makes them more practical in chilly weather, but when you wear them without socks, they're as cool on your feet as sandals.

Two years in and they still look as good as the day they arrived. I've long been a big fan of the Birkenstock Arizona sandals, but I think the Boston clogs might just be top dog in my shoe collection nowadays.
