The bride looked luminous, the mother-of-the-groom caused a minor stir in white – and the groom actually smiled for once. Yes, Andy Murray’s wedding to long-term girlfriend Kim Sears was the first nuptials that have got us truly excited this year.
But, as we pored over the details – the cathedral setting, Kim’s Swarovski crystal headdress – one thing stuck in our mind. Trees. The couple had trees – either cherry blossom or bay, according to various reports – lining the aisle. Without wishing to sound churlish, surely they’re a bit old hat? Like, four-years-old, already-done-by-the Cambridges old hat?
So what are this summer’s top new wedding trends? We spoke to the experts to find out…
1. Wedding dresses that
aren’t white. ‘Many designers are offering different colour options like golds, blush and silvers as well as the traditional white and ivory gowns’, says Ayshea Donaldson, Managing Director of My London Wedding Planner. ‘We’re also seeing contrasting pops of colour in headpieces and have noticed a move away from traditional ivory this summer for a fresher and more contemporary look’, says Emily Baxendale, creative director and designer of bespoke milliner Emily London.
2. And wedding rings in a less common shade of gold. ‘Rose gold is in for 2015, along with vintage engagement and wedding ring designs’, says Ayshea Donaldson from My London Wedding Planner.
3. Opt for a flowing veil. After all, when else in life can you wear one? ‘We’re noticing an increase in brides wanting to wear cathedral length veils, which are absolutely stunning and frame any dress beautifully’, says bridal designer Phillipa Lepley. Emily Baxendale of Emily London agrees. ‘Headpieces with detachable veils that can be removed before the evening are proving very popular’, she says.
4. It might be worth sticking your neck out. ‘Wedding dress

and big tulle skirts’, says Ayshea. Anyonita Green, editor of Confetti.co.uk,
agrees: ‘No matter the silhouette, 2015 is the summer of the neck!

5. Stick succulents in your bouquet. They may sound just about as unweddingy as a plant could be, but those fleshy plants are having a moment. ‘Couples are asking to incorporate succulents, which add interesting texture and detail to arrangements’, says Liesl Lamare, creative director of luxury wedding planners Zouch and Lamare. Also popular is the woodland theme and flower walls. ‘Floral arrangements are becoming less structured and incorporating a more flowing and organic feel with lots of foliage, herbs and greenery’, continues Liesl. ‘Bouquets are becoming more leafy and herbs such as rosemary and mint add a really gorgeous scent.’
6. Pick plants for your table arrangements. ‘We have noticed that it is much more popular to have plants on the tables now instead of cut flowers’, says Shane Connolly, who designed the flowers for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding. ‘Weddings are becoming more and more individual and less formulaic. The relaxed style of having plants reflects this. It’s a more homespun and homely approach, which is meaningful to the couple.’
7. A hotel? Pah! Have your wedding party in a yurt. ‘Tipis, yurts, warehouses and pubs are proving popular’, says Anyonita Green of Confetti.co.uk.
8. Think quirky when it comes to favours and decor. ‘So far in 2015 we’ve seen more brides matching their favours to the wedding theme’, says Anyonita Green of Confetti.co.uk. ‘This is a fab idea, because from the moment the guests receive their invitations to when they carry their favours home with them, everything is connected and in sync. A popular one has been mini-vintage typewriters that sit on the table and can even hold their placecards. Mini-vintage airplanes and suitcases are also popular. Anything vintage is huge.’
9. Wedding buffets used to be deemed naff. Not any more… ‘There’s been a surge in food banquets – huge spreads offering loads of choice instead of the traditional chicken or beef’, says Anyonita Green of Confetti.co.uk. ‘We’re also seeing a lot of ‘cheesecakes’ – cakes made out of cheese wheels.’ Ayshea Donaldson of My London Wedding Planner has also seen a surge in tapas. ‘A lot of couples are going for sharing boards, tapas and street food-style dining for their wedding breakfast.’
10. Have a Mississippi mud pie instead of the usual multi-tiered cake. ‘Buttercream buttercream buttercream: cakes are moving away from formal fondant and royal icing to more of a textured buttercream aesthetic’, says Liesl Lamare of Zouch and Lamare. ‘Couples are more and more interested in a really delicious cake flavour than an intricately piped cake – decadent Mississippi mud pie has been a popular request.’
