In January they called them, “the epitome of daytime dressy without going over the top” and by May Vogue was calling for its fashion conscious followers to “reconsider the cardigan” as a staple in their wardrobe.
So, if Vogue says the cardigan is officially ‘back’ (did they ever go away?) who are we to argue?
The cardigan has been a wardrobe staple for decades, but in recent years its appeal dropped in the style stakes in favour of ‘trendier’ light layers such as the silk kimono wrap or the patterned bomber jacket. But, now they’re ‘back’ and set to be bigger than ever. And we’re not talking about the little red cardigans donned by the cast of Call The Midwife either.
Loosely belted styles make for a chic summer layer when you can’t trust the British weather to stay consistently warm, while a classic buttoned cardigan is an assured knitwear staple that will see you through the seasons.
Champions of the humble cardigan for decades, Marks and Spencer suggest styling your cardigan with a t-shirt and jeans for a versatile daytime ensemble. “Styled over a T-shirt, jeans and trainers at the weekend or over a dress, the cardigan is the ultimate layering piece” a spokesperson for the brand said.
Max Mara, Christopher Kane, Gucci and the Duchess of Cambridge’s favourite label Alexander McQueen all feature a variety of covetable knitwear – and yes, cardigans – in their upcoming AW17 collections.
Prada’s ready-to-wear Spring 17 collection featured a variety of flattering wrap cardigans that just screamed easy wearable work-wear wardrobe, while Miu Miu’s Autumn/Winter ‘17 collection featured the welcome return of beautifully embellished and neatly embroidered cardigans.

So, could the come back of the cardigan mark a new chapter in smart-casual dressing?
Sandy Verdon, Creative Director at HOBBS, seems to think so.
“The humble cardigan has earned an eternal home in the Hobbs collection. For us, it is a Faithful style meaning it will always be there for you, season after season” Verdon said.
HOBBS Evie cardigan, £55.00
“Our Evie cardigan is a favourite. It comes in four colours, making it an ideal partner to any dress. And its shorter length finishes at the waist, which means it sits neatly with every dress style from straight shifts to ones with a full skirt. It’s so versatile it can be worn at work or on the weekend or even to a wedding. Let’s call it your perfect plus one.”
We reckon it’s time to dig out those old favourites, and maybe invest in a few new cardigans to add to the collection too!
